Job Summary

Under close supervision, assist Ophthalmic Technicians and care providers in providing care to all patients with respect for their uniqueness. Assist with basic patient care activities related to their clinic visit. Ophthalmic Apprentice adheres to Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology standards of performance to provide care to all patients. Applies critical thinking, procedures, guidelines, and competence to collaborate with the health care team to promote patient safety and quality outcomes. Complete 6 month training program under direct supervision designated of clinical staff to perform ophthalmic technical skills.

Essential Functions:

  • Ophthalmic Technician Apprentice will complete the training program and demonstrate competency. Apprentice will demonstrate professional behavior and excellent customer service throughout patient interactions. (20%)
  • Learn and demonstrate competency for Ophthalmic medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology. Learn and demonstrate competency to determine need/urgency of care based on patient information, medical record, and presenting signs/symptoms. (20%)
  • Learn and demonstrate technical skills to perform ocular examinations, including history taking, visual acuity, ocular motility, alignment, intraocular pressure assessment, lensometry, stereo testing, refraction, and administer topical ophthalmic medications. (20%)
  • Learn and demonstrate the ability to perform visual field testing, Optical Coherence Tomography, pachymetry, topography, biometry, and ocular photography. (20%)
  • Instrument scanning for pickup and delivery to track inventory from Sterile Processing department. (10%)
  • Cleans, stock, and prepares exam room according to regulatory compliance for patient care needs. (5%)
  • Learn and demonstrate understanding of patient education related to ophthalmic care. (5%)

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Required

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years In Clinical Base Setting Required

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in typing, required.
