Job Title: Senior Field Maintenance Technician Location: Regional Brief Description: The Senior Field Maintenance Technician works as a subject matter expert for field support of drilling rig equipment and drilling control systems. Individuals hired into this role will be responsible for supporting a variety of drilling control systems and other rig equipment to effectively support the Company's technology platforms. The Senior Field Maintenance Technician serves as a primary member of Tech Services field support team and may be responsible for the commissioning, support, and troubleshooting of controls, automation systems, and various industrial equipment utilized in the drilling of oil and gas wells. They travel to drilling rig field locations to perform a variety of controls and equipment related service and maintenance activities. Activities include servicing, repairing, troubleshooting, adjusting, testing, and downloading to drilling rig controls and automation systems. Additional duties include training and mentoring lower-level technicians on all drilling rig equipment, EcoCell, Cortex, and drilling rig control systems. Detailed Description:
- Work as a subject matter expert for drilling control systems, technology platforms, and rig-based equipment
- Perform controls and systems-based inspections, services, and repairs on new and existing technology products and drilling rig control systems
- Navigate and update software and firmware on various types of PLC's, switches, routers, HMI's, VFD's, generator controls, and other components that comprise the drilling rig control systems independently and remotely
- Advanced troubleshooting of electrical, controls, and systems-based issues via phone, remotely and while onsite
- Advanced knowledge in troubleshooting moxa switches, power supplies, relays, breakers, encoders, Profibus network, Canbus, and other controls system components
- Conduct training with all levels of technicians in controls and automation systems, HVAC, mechanical, hydraulics and/or diesel technology
- Properly conduct intermediate and complex controls and automation systems repairs
- Test and diagnose electrical and electronic components and repair of the system(s), including ability to effectively wire control panels and effectively isolate issues between engine and control house
- Provide recommendations on product improvements and enhancements
- Facilitate and oversee maintenance related projects on the rig with the rig crew or third parties and managing the call center with minimal supervision
- Remotely monitor issues and conduct root cause and trend analysis independently with no oversight; including Data Visualization Tool (DVT) to assist in investigations
- Use experience gained to mentor and train other technicians on drilling controls, automation systems, and troubleshooting
- Develop and monitor spare and replacement parts listing for specific equipment
- Expert level knowledge and skill to maintain industrial battery systems, troubleshoot, and repair ground faults; including generator voltage issues, exiter, rotor, diodes, fuses (power generation systems)
- Expert level skill to perform diagnostic testing of rig equipment with system software provided
- Advanced knowledge of oil and gas field components, including software and hardware
- Advanced knowledge of and experience repairing multiple types of industrial equipment
- Advanced knowledge of various hydraulic and mechanical circuits, and/or electrical and controls systems
- Demonstrated understanding of reference between speed/voltage and pressure and current
- Advanced knowledge of how to configure W-set file and compare data
- Expert level knowledge pertaining to core competencies of electrical theory (OHMs law, Series and Parallel Circuits, Electrical Distribution Systems, etc.)
- In depth knowledge and understanding with ability to teach PLCs, VFDs, MCCs, HMIs, single- and 3-phrase systems, fiber optics, network systems, switches, etc.
- Skilled ability to utilize a variety of electrical-related tools (e.g., oscilloscopes, voltmeters, multi-meters, power meters, signal generators, frequency counters, etc.)
- Advanced understanding and interpretation skills of electrical schematics and other technical documents
- Coordination and supervision of the control systems conversions of rigs
- All other duties as assigned that may be outside of this job description
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrate ability to successfully complete all duties and required trainings of a Field Maintenance Technician 3
- Ability to safely navigate drilling rig work sites with occasional walking, climbing, standing, stepping, etc. during normal rig operating conditions (day/night, outdoor, hot/cold weather, etc.)
- Ability to travel to visit drilling rig work sites and support business units in all areas as assigned; requiring extended travel to remote locations and/or overnight stay(s) outside normal office area
- Ability to work a rotational schedule that can include days or nights as well as weekends, holidays, and be on call after hours
- Demonstrate clear communication skills including ability to read, write and speak English as well as understand and promptly follow verbal and written instructions in English
- Must possess intermediate to advanced level computer skills with a proven ability to utilize Microsoft Office applications, e.g., MS Word, Power Point, Project, Visio, Excel, etc. and other MS software applications
- Advanced proficiency in using maintenance software, updating and properly closing work orders
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds independently while walking on uneven surfaces
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and crawl occasionally during visits to field and operational work areas
- Frequently use a variety of hand and power tools to perform a range of mechanically oriented functions including independent use of heavy-duty handheld and long-handled tools
- Ability to judge near and far distances to maintain awareness of, watch, and report ongoing work activities to coworkers and third parties
- Skilled ability to listen for unusual noises that signify equipment and machinery problems
- Accurately recall information over short- and long-term memory
- Maintain spatial orientation and awareness to safely move around work environment with many moving objects
- Stay alert and focused, including during occasional extended work periods
- Ability to immediately respond to emergency situations
- Demonstrated advanced math skills
- Possess strong interpersonal skills including ability to interact productively with coworkers and third parties; working closely with others under deadlines including time-sensitive response situations; and develop and maintain corporate level relationships
- Ability to operate oilfield equipment, and pass all certification exams as necessary
- Attend and successfully complete all additional training courses, certification courses and related work, as assigned
- Must work with an emphasis on safety for themselves and others including coworkers and third parties
- Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all designated times which could include but is not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses, coveralls, work gloves, respirator, and hearing protection
- Ability to successfully meet pre-employment testing requirements which may include, without limitation, pre-employment drug and alcohol test(s) and background checks as well as drug and/or alcohol testing periodically during employment (subject to state and federal laws)
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- 5+ years of relevant work experience with electrical and/or controls-based systems (degree in related field may serve in lieu of experience)
- 2 years of field maintenance experience
- Technical or vocational training combined with hands-on experience with controls and power systems, HVAC, hydraulics or diesel technology
- Must have valid state-issued driver's license and be eligible to drive Company vehicle including ability to meet requirements of Company's vehicle Use Agreement and Driving Policy
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2 years of Patterson-UTI field-maintenance experience
- 5+ years prior experience in drilling or any related industry
- Bachelor's degree in a computer-/electrical-related field
- Experience with: Omron, Amphion, Current Power, Siemens, Function Block, Allen Bradley, ABB Drives, Woodward Easy Gen Controls, Yaskawa Drives, or other related electrical equipment
- Experience with equipment maintenance to include: Caterpillar 3512 series engines, Waukesha L7044 Series engines, Alta DW, F-1600 mud pumps, Forum Catwalk, GD800 DW, ST-80, Rotary Table, Hydraulics, TDS 11 Top Drive, ADS-10 SD DW, DSDG 375 DW, or related
Work Environment: This position requires work both indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions, including precipitation, cold / heat, high wind, and turbulent conditions. The Senior Field Maintenance Technician will be regularly exposed to the typical conditions of the local area where the rig is located.
