Job Summary:
Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy. The purpose of the Manager of Florida Accounting position is to manage and develop a team of individuals who perform tasks associated with the company's accounting close and financial reporting processes. Additionally, the Manager is responsible for working effectively and collaboratively with the EY outsourced team to support the ongoing managed service agreement. In this role, the Manager Accounting is responsible for ensuring that the accounting impacts of the company's business activities and transactions are understood and properly recorded to the general ledger, and that such accounting impacts and related variances to budget and prior year results, if applicable, are clearly explained and properly presented in internal and/or external financial reports as needed. The Manager Accounting is also responsible for ensuring that the team, including the outsourced team, performs its tasks in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with published deadlines while strictly adhering to company policies and controls.
Responsibilities:
Accounting Close Process:
Understand assigned responsibilities, relevant GAAP and FERC accounting guidance, and operational matters that affect the accounting cycle Review month-end deliverables (primarily journal entries) Review account reconciliations Work with the appropriate parties to resolve accounting issues as they arise Ensure SOX control structure is in place and monitored with respect to the close process Prepare or review documentation for accounting conclusions on accounting matters Ensure strict adherence to closing deadlines
Financial Reporting Process:
Review monthly internal financial reports as assigned Review monthly sales revenue and volume analysis (weather/volume/price impacts) Review quarterly SEC and FERC financial reports, including supporting schedules Review periodic state regulatory financial reports Ensure SOX control structure is in place and monitored with respect to the reporting process Work with independent auditors on annual audited financial statements Work with the appropriate parties to resolve issues as they arise
Other:
Develop and coach staff Support regulatory filing efforts including rate cases and rider filings for retail business Support wholesale and transmission data requests Lead and/or participate in efficiency and process improvement efforts Assist with special projects (eg new revenue recognition and lease standards) Research regulatory matters and related impacts and document appropriate accounting treatment Attend business related meetings as needed Support the EY outsourced team and the ongoing managed service agreement

Bachelors Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or other related degree and eight (8) years related work experience including at least 2 years of successful direct people management experience for level II

Prior experience with rate filings (e.g., preparing, interpreting and/or accounting for base rate, fuel, rider and deferral request filings) Familiarity with Duke Energy's customer billing systems and tariffs/rate schedules Prior experience in revenue accounting and analysis (weather/price/volume analysis and reporting) Knowledge of FERC vs GAAP accounting differences Experience with Peoplesoft and Hyperion Knowledge of FIHUB Cube reporting Familiarity with Wdesk/Workiva financial reporting applications Experience in preparing FERC annual and quarterly reports Experience in an accounting research role; writing accounting position papers CPA Knowledge of regulated utility accounting and ratemaking principles Familiarity with FERC chart of accounts Extensive experience with accounting systems/applications Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to pertinent business issues Effective interpersonal skills, team oriented Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously History of high quality work in an accounting environment dealing with rigorous reporting and closing deadlines Demonstrated ability to drive process efficiency improvements
