Description

Participate as a full-time physician extender in the Neuroscience Institute Department of
Neurology and in medical school activities. This position primarily participates in
development and implementation of an outpatient service for Southern Illinois University
School of Medicine Neuroscience Institute Department of Neurology including patient
care, clinical teaching, and research components.


Examples of Duties

SERVICE

  • As a member of the multidisciplinary team, assist in the delivery of medical services to patients seen in the clinic, seen for consultation or scheduled for procedures under medical direction and supervision of fulltime faculty physician(s).
  • Manage individual patient care including:
    • Perform health status assessment by obtaining medical history and performing physical examination
    • Order and interpret diagnostic studies.
    • Develop and implement treatment plan
    • Perform other diagnostic, therapeutic or corrective measures as necessary.
  • Provide patient education and counseling to patients and their families.
  • Communicate with the physicians, providing a summary of the clinical data and discussing further evaluation and therapy patients as needed.
  • Communicate with referring physicians regarding patient care issues after consultations and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional practice in accordance with departmental policy and the University practice plan (SIU Healthcare).
  • Teach and evaluate medical students, residents, physician's assistant students and nurse practitioner students as they rotate through the educational program.
  • Maintain competence in clinical practices using continuing education opportunities, professional conferences, and maintains licensure/certification.
  • Assist in quality assurance audits and responses..

RESEARCH
  • Participate in clinical trials as needed with direction from Collaborative Physician

ADMINISTRATION
  • Participate in scheduled meetings
  • Participate in the development of standards and policies regarding patient care through participation on appropriate committees.

Qualifications

Certified Nurse Practitioner
a. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations; AND
b. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program by time of hire; AND
c. Received a passing score on national certifying exam by time of hire; AND
d. Ability to be licensed in the State of Illinois as a Nurse Practitioner by time of hire.

Physician Assistant-Certified
a. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations; AND
b. Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program by time of hire; AND
c. Received a passing score on the national certifying exam by time of hire; AND
d. Licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois (or eligibility for
licensure) by time of hire.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Two or more years of experience.
