Summary:

This position serves as a Neurodiagnostic Tech Apprentice to receive on the job training for the skills they are learning in the program of study. This position assists with the daily tasks of a Neurodiagnostic Tech under the supervision of UNC Medical Center Staff.

Responsibilities:

Monitors patients undergoing video EEG monitoring for safety, on-site in the EMU Technologists Workroom. Demonstrates knowledge of monitoring system and camera controls. Alerts nursing and/or technologist staff when clinical seizures or other paroxysmal events occur, or when other risk factors are identified. Communicates with patients and bedside staff to obtain relevant histories and information about events from patients, family members, and/or electronic medical records. Documents observations and inputs any relevant information as appropriate. Maintains equipment and ensures that all equipment is in working order according to department protocol. Troubleshoots basic problems with equipment and escalates for resolution if unable to resolve the problem. Completes hospital training to alert supervisor and/or activate hospital systems such as seizure response and first aid, etc. per established protocols when encountering patient clinical issues. Performs other tasks as assigned and according to department needs, including but not limited to restock supplies, remove electrodes, disconnect patients, set up machines, and disinfection of equipment and supplies
Measure, mark, and apply electrodes with oversight until proven competence. Basic recognition and escalation of normal and abnormal EEG patterns. Prepares reports and documentation according to department processes. Performs other tasks as assigned and according to department needs.
Independently complete EDT studies for once have completed program clinical competency and demonstrated proficiency at the site of employment. These can include electroencephalogram (EEG), long term monitoring (LTM), evoked potentials (EP), intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM), nerve conduction studies (NCS), and polysomnogram (PSG).

Qualifications

Education Requirements:
* None required as long as other position qualifications are met.
* Must be enrolled in a North Carolina-based EDT program.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Must be certified in BLS and seizure first aid.
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Candidate must have completed the following coursework prior to the apprenticeship: Instrumentation and Recording Methods, Clinical Correlates, and Laboratory Practice I.
* No prior clinical experience required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* General technical supervision by a Neurodiagnostic Technologist I or above.
* Continued completion of the required courses within the EDT program. Failure to progress in the program will cause a loss of apprenticeship.
* Apprentices are not qualified to analyze EEG studies independently without oversight.
