The Department of Animal Science conducts research, provides undergraduate and graduate instruction, and offers extension and continuing education on the biology and management of food, laboratory, and companion animal species.

Position Summary

The employee working in this position will be responsible for the health and welfare of research animals including poultry, swine, sheep, horses, goats and cattle. Responsible for feeding, watering, monitoring health of the animals, assisting with research needs, and maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities. Assist with vaccinations, treatment of illness, and animal movement within and between animal housing units. Maintain accurate records. Clean and disinfect animal housing facilities. Assist in mixing of feed, animal waste removal, lawn mowing and snow plowing, and minor repairs.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1-2 years of domestic farm animal handling and livestock husbandry experience.
  • Knowledge of animal health issues.
  • Must demonstrate good communication skills.
  • Must be safety oriented.
  • Must be willing to work under varying climatic conditions and be exposed to loud noises, dusty conditions, animal waste and odors.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • The successful candidate must be personable, flexible, possess excellent communication and organizational skills and take pride in their work.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty and staff. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be available to work weekends and some holidays. Must be willing to work extended hours as necessary to accomplish goals consistent with the University's business needs.
  • Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted NY State driver's license and must be cleared to drive for university business.

Preferred Qualifications

  • AAS Degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technician Degree, Animal Technician Certification.
  • Experience working in a research setting.
