JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Animal Science at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position, in Meat Science. Candidates will be considered for appointment at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will have a 75% extension and 25% teaching appointment. This full-time, 36-week, appointment will begin on April 1, 2025.

We seek an outstanding meat scientist who will lead the butcher's school registered apprentice program.This innovative and expanding extension program provides training for those who want to work in the meat industry and includes hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) certification, a required food safety credential.Additionally, development and delivery of innovative extension programs for the meat industry is expected to be integrated with a complementary applied research program. The successful candidate will advise graduate students, teach an undergraduate course and laboratory on Animal Products Technology, and participate in the College's mission to serve industry and consumer stakeholders. They will also be expected to engage in appropriate professional activities within and outside the Department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Animal Science, Meat Science, Muscle Biology or a closely related field. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Candidates must have a strong record of academic output, demonstrated teaching ability for formal or non-formal audiences and the potential to conduct applied research and obtain external funding. Excellent communication, teamwork, and leadership skills are essential. The Department is especially interested in candidates who, through their research and education efforts, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community at Penn State.

The Department of Animal Science at Penn State (https://animalscience.psu.edu/ ) includes 34 faculty members and is home to internationally recognized programs in animal nutrition reproduction, physiology, and genetics. The 16,000 sq. ft., USDA-inspected meat laboratory is located on campus and supports a wide variety of teaching, research and extension activities throughout the year.
