Radio Communications Technician

Summary

Responsible for performing the installation and maintenance of all electronic and specialty equipment installed in city vehicles and the City of Garland radio communication infrastructure.

Hourly Pay: $28.81 - 36.77 (Depending on qualifications)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Perform various installations and repairs as needed.

  • Mentor and lead installation technicians on both installations and repairs.

  • Maintains an accurate inventory of all system components

  • Maintains radio databases and subscriber fleet inventories

  • Maintains public safety radio system

  • Maintains and repairs mobiles, portables and fixed base stations

  • Maintains Point-to-Point Microwave systems

  • Keeps informed of industry standards and trends and attends seminars, conferences and professional organization meetings

  • Documents and maintain records of preventative maintenance schedules

  • Maintains ongoing communication with all radio stakeholders

  • Coordinate various infrastructure projects

  • Manage the Storm and Flood Siren Infrastructure

  • Maintains strong relationships with the customers.

  • Maintains effective relationships with support vendors and manufacturers

  • Participate in on-call support as needed after-hours, weekends and holidays

  • Prepares written documents for City Administration as requested by manager

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two-year college degree, formal technical training or a combination of college and training

  • Two years related experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.

Preferred Qualifications Education/ Experience:
  • Four-year college degree

  • Formal training in radio communication systems

  • More than four years of experience in radio programming, installation, repair and electrical theory

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of 12-volt electronics and usage

  • Skill in advising a team of employees

  • Skill in understanding and analyzing prevalent issues

  • Working knowledge of Motorola 700/800MHz Simulcast radio systems

  • Working knowledge of Motorola Dispatch consoles networks

  • Working knowledge of Motorola subscriber programming software Knowledge of VHF, UHF, 700MHz, 800MHz, 6GHz and 11GHzfrequencies

  • Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations

  • Knowledge of various radio communication systems

  • Skill in effective communication

  • Skill in basic computer operations

  • Basic networking skills Ability to perform several tasks as assigned

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid class C Texas driver's license
