Position: Maintenance Apprentice
Location: Horsham, PA
Wage: $24.78
Shift: 3/4/4/3 schedule 12 hour shift
Must be flexible between days and nights on a monthly basis
36- 40 hours weekly
Length of Apprenticeship: Typically, 4 years with a pay increase yearly after On-the-Job Training competencies have been met and employee is still within good standing.

While reporting directly to the Shift Supervisor, the following job description outlines the essential functions of each level of role within the production department. The following lists are not exhaustive, and the employee in each of these roles is expected to assume any and all duties assigned by management irrespective of whether such duties are specifically included in the following.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Complies with established job safety practices, policies, and procedures as specified in plant and corporate directives for safe performance of the work assignment.
  • Supports and follows the guidelines of the food safety system.
  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots machinery and tooling. Ensures that parts and tooling are in accordance with instructions, prints, and work orders. May be required to make drawings or sketches of parts to be made or repaired.
  • Proficient in the use of all shop equipment to install, maintain, and troubleshoot machinery and tooling.
  • Interprets drawings, calculates, and determines indices, tapers, and other dimensions to be used for part(s), working raw materials into finished dimensions with exact tolerances per print.
  • Receives tools and paperwork; establishes and maintains logbooks.
  • Selects, grinds, and adjusts tools ensuring correct speeds and feed rates of tooling for efficient machining. Ensures that parts and tooling are in accordance to precision requirements for both tolerance and finish.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools, lathes, and grinders.
  • Repairs and maintains all assigned machines and equipment including preventative maintenance.
  • Performs organizational duties including maintaining an organized and clean work area.
  • Communicates pertinent information to next shift.
  • Performs clean-up, painting, and housekeeping duties.
  • Performs welding and heat treating as needed.
  • May monitor supply conditions and informs management as necessary.
  • May provide support for plant facilities maintenance.
  • Initiates, reviews, and follows all standard operating procedures (SOPs) for area of responsibility.
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the division, the group, and the company. Includes ability to handle stress and to interact with others so as to establish and maintain a positive and productive work environment and minimize personal conflicts.
  • Required to work assigned schedule or 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights, Monday through Sunday, working hours may vary as specified by management. Incumbent must be able to work overtime on a regular basis and/or be on call as directed by management.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required between the assigned start and end times of work.
  • Performs duties without posing a direct threat to anyone or to property. Direct threat is defined as a significant risk of substantial harm that cannot be eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level by reasonable accommodation.
  • Communication. Ability to communicate effectively, write effectively, read, comprehend, and follow complicated verbal and written instructions.
  • Assures and maintains safe and healthful working conditions while enforcing safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs such individual assignments as management may direct.
  • Ability to meet the knowledge, skills, abilities, physical requirements, and working conditions set forth in these essential functions and responsibilities and on the attached Physical Demands Assessment.
  • Must follow company policies, procedures, practices, and standards of conduct as outlined in the manuals.
  • Maintains an awareness and complies with hazardous waste management and other environmental management requirements in the workplace by attending scheduled training sessions.
  • Recognizes waste streams and minimizes waste generation, through prudent use of materials, proper disposal and segregation as directed during training or by the EC, EFP/EM. Understands and practices proper accumulation and storage requirements for wastes.
  • Required on-the-job job and classroom training.

  • You are interested in completing an Associates Degree/Certification in Mechatronics or related field manufacturing maintenance (program must be approved through Sonoco's Corporate Maintenance Excellence team).
  • You have experience with hand tools
  • You have a GED/ High School Diploma required
  • You can lift 50 pounds
  • Must maintain a 3.0 average during schooling
  • Sonoco will pay 100% of schooling after grants/scholarships. Candidate must stay with Sonoco at least 3 years after degree is obtained or they must pay back cost of schooling.
