Brief Summary of Work for this Position
We are searching for an outstanding educators/scholar to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Educational Administration within the Department of Educational Leadership, beginning August 2025.
Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach graduate-level courses for both online (synchronous and asynchronous) and hyflex (in-person and online simultaneously) environments focused primarily on preparing graduates to be effective school, district, or state-level organizational leaders.
  • Collaborate with departmental colleagues in continuous program improvement, ongoing student and program assessment, and new program development particularly focused in the areas of K-12 educational administration.
  • Mentor graduate students engaged in internships, problems of practice, and research experiences by chairing or serving as a member of master's portfolio and doctoral dissertations committees.
  • Maintain an active and rigorous research agenda addressing issues related to educational administration, educational policy, and leadership.
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • PhD or EdD in Educational Administration or closely related field from an accredited institution

    • Note - ABD candidates may be considered, but doctoral degree must be earned before appointment date.



  • Experience working in K-12 schools/districts.
  • Familiarity with basic concepts, principles, and theories focused on K-12 leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience leading/facilitating educator professional development and/or graduate-level instruction.
  • An emerging record or promise of focused scholarly activity in the field of educational leadership and policy studies, as evidenced by at least one peer-reviewed presentation, peer-reviewed journal article, or book chapter.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Successful graduate-level teaching in the field of educational leadership.
  • Experience with teaching and/or developing courses utilizing an online platform.
  • Established record of scholarly productivity demonstrated through publications in peer-reviewed journals with a focus on educational administration, school administration, educational leadership, or closely related fields.
  • Exhibits the knowledge, methodological skills, and professional experiences needed to carry out applicant's own research as well as support student research.
  • At least 3 years' experience as a school and/or district-level administrator in K-12 education
  • Demonstrated evidence of ways research, teaching, and service contribute to building and sustaining inclusive communities.
  • Potential for securing external funds for research, teaching, and service contribute to building and sustaining inclusive communities.
  • Evidence of advising masters/doctoral students in supporting thesis/dissertation work.
  • Evidence of success in collaborating with public schools and districts, as well as diverse stakeholders.

The Department of Educational Leadership offers four master's-level graduate programs (Curriculum Studies in Equity, Evaluation and Organizational Learning, Higher Education, and School Administration) and three concentrations within the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership (Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Administration, and Higher Education), an undergraduate minor in Leadership Studies, and four post-baccalaureate certificates (Coaching and Mentoring, College Teaching and Learning, Community College Leadership, and Evaluation).

The Watson College of Education ( WCE) ( www.uncw.edu/ed) is a rapidly growing college with over 65 tenure-track faculty members working in undergraduate and master's programs in the Department of Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy and Special Education and the Department of Instructional Technology, Foundations and Secondary Education, and master's and doctoral programs in the Department of Educational Leadership.
