Recruitment/Posting Title Postdoctoral Research Position in Observational Cosmology
Department SAS - Physics & Astronomy
Salary Commensurate With Experience
Posting Summary
The Rutgers University Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral research position to collaborate with Prof. Eric Gawiser on cosmological studies as part of the Simons Observatory. Assuming satisfactory performance, this postdoc will have the opportunity to continue for a third year in collaboration with Prof. Jo Dunkley at Princeton University.
The postdoctoral researcher will engage in cosmological research with the Simons Observatory on topics of mutual interest. One topic of particular interest is cross-correlations of CMB data with large-scale structure, for which the postdoc will also have the opportunity to participate in the Rubin Observatory LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration. The postdoctoral researcher will be encouraged to learn new skills and will be offered conscientious mentoring and a supportive and collaborative research environment.
There will be an opportunity for independent research, including access to Rutgers' 10% share of the Southern African Large Telescope. Active research in the Rutgers Astrophysics group covers a broad range of observational and theoretical work in cosmology, dark matter, gravitational lensing, galaxy clusters, galaxy formation and evolution, star formation, astrophysical turbulence, and supernovae and their remnants. Rutgers astrophysicists participate in collaborations including Advanced ACTPol, Rubin Observatory LSST, and HETDEX, as well as large projects with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, HST, JWST, MeerKAT, and planning for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. The Physics and Astronomy Department is located in Piscataway, NJ as part of the flagship New Brunswick campus. The campus is just 45 min from New York City in an area with several astrophysics institutes and departments, facilitating rich knowledge exchange and collaborations.
The position at Rutgers is intended to start in July 2025 and offers a competitive salary and benefits. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy prior to appointment. Interested candidates are asked to submit a cover letter, a CV including a list of publications and noting any equity and inclusion activities in which the candidate has been involved, and a brief (2-3 page) description of research experience and plans. All materials, including 3 letters of reference, should be submitted online via https://jobs.rutgers.edu/postings/237163. Complete applications, including letters, received by December 15, will receive full consideration.
Questions regarding this position can be addressed to Prof. Eric Gawiser at gawiser@physics.rutgers.edu.
