What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Mechanical Engineering Group as a Mechanical Engineer I whowill provide general mechanical engineering support for the design of elements installed in detector systems and particle accelerator beam lines. Examples of such elements are electromagnets, support structures, beam diagnostics, and superconducting accelerator elements. The position will draw on education and practical experience in machine design, material science, structural, thermal, and fluid mechanics design using calculations as well as finite element analysis (FEA). Additionally, the incumbent will use 3D computer aided design (CAD) tools for component and assembly design as a precursor to analyses and fabrication. This engineer will work individually or as part of a team on the large-scale project. The successful candidate is expected to provide engineering support for projects from concept through design, fabrication, assembly and commissioning. The engineer will be required to plan their time on assigned tasks and provide this information to the Project Engineer for planning and tracking of progress. The candidate will be required to present technical reports, defend the design during design or safety reviews and produce system documentation. The engineer will work with scientists, design staff, technicians and other engineers as the need and project complexity grows.

In this role you will...

• Perform as the design engineer on components and systems employed in SRF cryomodules, accelerator beamlines, and detector systems.
• Work with senior engineers and scientists in defining requirements, designing, analyzing, fabricating, installing, testing and commissioning components or systems.
• Analyze structural and thermal aspects of designs using engineering calculations and FEA tools such as ANSYS.
• Design components and assemblies in a 3D CAD tool such as Siemens NX; Produce or check drawings for fabrication of those designs.
• Support procurement and fabrication of components and assemblies; Familiarity with basic metal fabrication and welding techniques is desired.
• Document work in analysis reports, test reports, and technical notes.
• Present results at internal reviews and appropriate technical conferences.
• Develop and perform test methodologies to validate designs.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors degree in Engineering from an accredited university,or a student pursuing a Bachelors degree froman accredited Engineering program with an expected graduation by December 2024

Desired:

• Masters degree in a related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Able to communicate clearly in writing (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings) and explain work to his/her supervisor and others in the group
• Ability to work effectively with peers
• Data analysis skills
