Summary The purpose of this position is to support the medical health of our community's animals. This is accomplished by serving in a lead role in the day-to-day operation of the animal shelter; coordinating and/or performing supportive tasks for surgical operations; providing customer service to citizens in correspondence with the clinic; and collaborating with and completing administrative duties as assigned by the Staff Veterinarian and Director to lead the Medical Department. Other duties include on-call medical support for after-hours staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Coordinates veterinary staff for and/or assists with spay/neuter surgeries; sedates and prepares animals for surgery, monitors animals' general health and vital signs during procedures and while recuperating. Additionally prepares for and assists veterinarian with emergency medical procedures. Coordinates veterinary staff for and/or assists with administering prescribed medications, both oral and injectable, to animals in order to provide support and nursing care; cleaning, care, and monitoring of specialized animal housing (i.e. canine/feline maternity and isolations areas); maintenance of all medical records; providing triage and routing direction for sick, injured, and/or nursing animals upon intake; and performing health checks on animals in the shelter based on exam requests submitted by staff and volunteers. Assists with supervising employees by assigning schedule and work duties, monitoring work tasks, and providing counsel to employees as needed. Additionally serves as lead trainer for new employees and oversees volunteers when needed. Schedules and/or performs on-call duties as assigned by Staff Veterinarian, coordinating transport and care plan with contracted vet clinics as needed. Assist in overseeing shelter medical services operations, including, but not limited to animal medical treatments, diagnostic testing, daily shelter surgeries, surgery appointments, vet check rounds, as well as the general care of animals under veterinary care. Schedules and/or performs on-call duties as assigned by Staff Veterinarian, coordinating transport and care plan with contracted vet clinics as needed. Notify Shelter Manager when restocking items from shelter is needed. Perform kennel cleaning and other related housekeeping duties. Maintain assigned equipment and supplies and report any problems or needed repairs to Shelter Manager. Works under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian employed by the City of Garland. Completes other duties by providing input for standard operating procedures and budget; coordinating maintenance for surgical equipment; collaborating with the operations Coordinator for inventory management; and maintaining controlled drug logs. Coordinates veterinary staff and/or performs humane euthanasia of animals when needed for reasons including medical, behavior, and space. All other duties as assigned by Director and/or Shelter Manager.
Hourly Rate $18.14 - 23.30 (Depending on qualifications) Minimum Qualifications
Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Preferred Qualifications Education/ Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in animal care, medical, leadership, and/or a related field. Experience with customer service Experience handling cash

Basic skill operating a computer and office equipment This position has responsibilities that require exerting up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 constantly. Ability to assist guest with adoption process Ability to thoroughly clean Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions. Ability to process information rapidly and accurately.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment The work is performed in an animal shelter surrounding. Position requires workers to walk or stand for periods oat a time; lift and carry up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 constantly; bend, reach, hold, grasp, and turn objects; and use fingers to operate computer or typewriter keyboards. The work requires the ability to speech normally and to use normal or aided vision and hearing. Work is subject to working on weekends and holidays. Employee may have to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
