Inova Ewing Forensic Assessment and Consultation Teams (FACT) is looking for a dedicated Forensic Nurse Examiner to join the team. This role will be Part-time Night Shift: 24 hours per week; must be flexible with shifts and on-call hours; 3 weekend shifts every 8 weeks & 2 weekday night shifts per week.

The Ewing Forensic Assessment and Consultation Teams (FACT) Program forensic nurse examiner (FNE) is a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) responsible for responding to requests for forensic medical examinations of the alleged sexually assaulted/ physically abused patient and/or suspect evidence collection. *Will consider RNs without prior SANE experience that are willing to complete online certification courses prior to orientation

Forensic Nurse Examiner Job Responsibilities:



  • The FNE performs a forensic medical assessment, collects appropriate forensic evidence, provides psychological support, and offers referrals for follow-up and counseling.
  • The FNE often testifies in the court system as an expert in the field of sexual assault and physical violence. Requires travel to other jurisdictions/ facilities as warranted including other medical facilities, courts and detention center environments.
  • The FNE's objective is to provide knowledgeable and caring clinical practice and care coordination through an understanding of patient, family, nurse, and healthcare delivery teams.
  • The FNE must consistently provide safe, therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic way while incorporating differences into the provision of care. Conducts all patient care in a patient and family-centered manner. Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum, to include patient and family education.
  • The FNE communicates effectively and works cooperatively with others. Has respect for and understanding of other clinical disciplines. Uses an integrated approach toward patient outcomes.
  • Quality and Best Practice- Serves as an empowering body to influence patient empowerment, and successful outcomes of financial and clinical quality, through relationships and access-based knowledge. Utilizes standards, guidelines, and pathways for care delivery. Determines process for delivery of care from direct patient and family communication, technology, and other healthcare team member collaboration.
  • Professional Development -Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning. Provides direction and guidance to others regarding practice. Serves as a resource, preceptor, and mentor. Demonstrates leadership skills in decision making and problem solving.


Additional Requirements:



  • Work schedule: Part-time Night Shift: 24 hours per week; must be flexible with shifts and on-call hours; 3 weekend shifts every 8 weeks & 2 weekday night shifts per week
  • Education: BSN from an accredited school of nursing. If RN has an Associates Degree (ADN); must complete BSN within 24 months of start date.
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 months of Registered Nurse clinical experience. Prefer prior experience and SANE program completion (adults and/or pediatric)
  • Certification: BLS from AHA for Healthcare Provider certification required; RN licensed, or eligible to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an RN. Position requires completion of accredited SANE courses through IAFN within 30 days of start or transfer. Both Adult & Pediatric course completion required.   • Other: Strong verbal and written communication skills; Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to display a caring demeanor toward others. Proficient computer skills required
