SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for management of the Bank's Accounting Department.

SUMMARY:

The Controller is responsible for the effective operation of the Accounting Department including the daily operations, external financial reporting, and tax compliance along with the accuracy of, and financial controls over, the general ledger for First Bancshares and all its subsidiaries.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the daily operations and functions of the corporate Accounting Department
  • Maintain the general ledger and a system of internal accounting controls to ensure all financial information is presented fairly in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Coordinate daily/monthly review of general ledger activity to include balance sheet reconciliations, review of income & expense key indicators, and yield/rate analysis of net interest margins to ensure accuracy of recorded activity, resolve any discrepancies in a timely manner, and identify opportunities to enhance corporate earnings.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of all external reporting and corporate governance filings including, but not limited to, call reports, federal reserve reports, the company's annual report (and related footnotes), etc. This can also include collaboration on ASOP and Trust related filings as well as subsidiary related filings for Centier Nevada (Investments) and 119th Street Capital (and related entities), in addition to corporate stock and/or debt issuance.
  • Implement new accounting standards as applicable.
  • Develop tax strategies and manage all required tax filings to ensure both regulatory compliance as well as minimizing the corporation's tax liability.
  • Update income tax worksheets for allocation of monthly Federal Income and applicable State tax expenses.
  • Provide training to staff members as determined to increase department efficiency and the team's professional development.
  • Assists with the gathering of information for audits and examinations by regulators and external auditors as needed.
  • Provide support and assistance with research for departments as needed.
  • Quickly respond to fire-drills and other ad-hoc analysis requested by management.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Strong understanding of related tax laws.
  • Ability to develop strong, positive relationships with key business stakeholders and demonstrate respectful, constructive negotiating skills.
  • Leadership ability to inspire and motivate others to perform well through continuous feedback and encouragement of growth and development.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills, with proven ability to present and explain complex information and suggest process improvements to a diverse audience ranging from Operations personnel to the Board of Directors.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Detail oriented but also able to quickly grasp the broader strategic picture.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Experience with common Excel add-ins such as Essbase, Retrieve or other cell-based reporting tools a plus
  • Experience with CSI, FIS, Oracle Hyperion or other ERP applications is a plus

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience for a public accounting firm or medium to large sized financial institution.
  • Master's Degree a plus
  • CPA designation required.

Department hours are Monday-Friday 8:00-5:00 CST
