Summary

As a Monitoring & Diagnostics Engineer at Portland General Electric (PGE), you'll be part of a team committed to maximizing power generation system reliability and minimizing asset damage through proactive, data-driven engineering solutions. This role combines technical expertise with analytical insight to monitor system performance, identify equipment and operational risks, and implement reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and root cause analysis (RCA) strategies.

You will contribute to PGE's clean energy future by working at the intersection of advanced analytics, reliability engineering, and cutting-edge technology-ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable power delivery to millions across Oregon.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards

  • Apply and advance knowledge of engineering processes and standards across generation assets.
  • Perform system monitoring and diagnostics, analyze performance data, and support the development of asset health monitoring tools.
  • Apply RCM and RCA to assess equipment performance and optimize plant reliability.
  • Support implementation of long-term maintenance strategies and life-cycle asset planning.

Engineering Production

  • Prepare a variety of engineering deliverables, from basic technical documentation to moderately complex analysis and reports.
  • Recommend and support equipment design improvements to optimize cost, reliability, and safety.
  • Perform predictive testing and data analysis to prevent failures and improve asset performance.

Project Coordination

  • Collaborate across teams to implement reliability and monitoring initiatives.
  • Utilize predictive and preventative maintenance (PM/PDM) techniques and Advanced Pattern Recognition (APR).
  • Lead or support small-scale projects and initiatives that enhance plant system availability and performance.

Knowledge Sharing & Mentorship

  • Stay current with emerging technology, industry standards, and engineering best practices.
  • Assist with training and mentoring peers or less-experienced colleagues on reliability methodologies and diagnostic tools.
  • Participate in operational budgeting, forecasting, and performance tracking.

Education / Experience / Certifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, power, or related engineering field.
  • Preferred: ABET-accredited program.
  • Experience:
    • Associate Level: 0-2 years
    • Engineer Level: 2+ years in engineering, preferably in a power generation or utility setting
  • Certifications: FE exam preferred (may be required based on role and level)

Core Competencies

Functional

  • Understanding of power plant systems, equipment, and operations.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics, thermodynamics, vibration analysis, and data interpretation.
  • Experience with RCM, RCA, FMEA, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Proficiency in data visualization and tools like MS Excel; familiarity with APR and DGA is a plus.

General

  • Strong decision-making, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills (verbal and written).
  • Ability to work independently or within cross-functional teams.

Physical & Cognitive Demands

  • Ability to work extended hours, variable schedules, and respond during emergencies or inclement weather.
  • Field work includes walking over uneven terrain and lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Requires regular use of computer systems and engagement with plant/field environments.

Schedule, Travel & Location

  • Primarily located within service territory.
  • Occasional overnight travel (1-2 times per month).
  • Valid driver's license required.

Compensation Range:

$68,850.00 - $135,750.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
