Job Summary

This project in the Division of Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine (OECM) will support initiatives to identify workers at high risk for occupational disease from exposure to emerging hazards in the workplace. The long-term goal of this project is to protect vulnerable workers from illness, injury, and death from preventable causes in their workplaces. An initial priority will be to establish a California Silicosis Support Network (CSSN) that can provide critical services to workers in the engineered stone fabrication industry who are exposed to crystalline silica dust. Many of the exposed workers are low-wage, immigrant, and vulnerable to workplace exploitation.

The Clinical Research Coordinator position will perform tasks under the direction of the CSSN leadership. The primary responsibility will be to coordinate and communicate with workers exposed to hazardous engineered stone dust in California to provide health information, connect them to health screening and clinical care, and refer them to legal resources if needed. The CRC will perform data entry of clinical data collected as part of a disease registry maintained at UCSF and administer exposure questionnaires. The CRC will also help development educational materials and a website regarding the hazards of engineered stone dust and silica dust.

• Develop education materials in English and Spanish to be used within UCSF and widely in California regarding the hazards of silica.
• Facilitate access to diagnosis and treatment for uninsured and underinsured stone fabrication workers. Identify exposed workers, schedule clinical/study visits, administer questionnaires, and collect medical history and records. Connect workers to resources regarding their legal rights and protections.
• Coordinate, communicate and network with other studies and technicians; communicate with any affiliated groups.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $34.32 - $55.19 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Division of Occupational, Environmental, and Climate Medicine (OECM) is an integrated division in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco with a presence across three sites including UCSF Medical Center (Parnassus/Mt. Zion), Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), and the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). UCSF OECM has achieved national and international recognition as a center for research, training, and clinical care. As one of the few such Divisions based within a Department of Medicine (most academic units are housed in a Department of Preventive Medicine or a School of Public Health), UCSF's occupational, environmental and climate medicine presence is particularly noteworthy in US academic internal medicine. The division's mission is advance the field of Occupational, Environmental and Climate medicine through research, education, and service to patients and the community.

Required Qualifications

• HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities
• Attention to detail; strong interpersonal skills; excellent, effective verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with participants, team members, other departments and outside institutions; and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while working with a diverse subject population.
• Ability to work well independently, complete projects in a timely manner, and prioritize multiple projects to ensure the completion of essential tasks by deadlines.
• Native Spanish language proficiency.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; or equivalent experience/training.
• Understanding of patient population to create rapport and a relationship, while also giving insight to what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation.
• Experience working with electronic medical records and confidential patient information.
• Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, database building/analysis, and data management.

  • Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • The Protection of Human Research Subjects
  • CHR regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects
