Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit |
The main purpose of the
UNC Greensboro Police Officer position is to protect and serve the students, faculty, staff and visitors of University of North Carolina Greensboro through law enforcement and crime prevention. The selected candidate(s) will patrol campus and investigate complaints and violations of State laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. This person also develops and implements preventative patrol techniques and performs specialized duties to deter crime and promote effective safety and security practices. |
Position Summary |
Positions in this banded class perform law enforcement work at a University campus or other State facility. With full powers of arrest, positions enforce the laws of the State and the United States Government. Positions have law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves patrolling an assigned area for response to complaints or calls for detection of violations in the enforcement of State laws and applicable regulations. Duties include apprehending observed violators committing offenses, investigating violations or complaints in order to assess and handle cases, collection, and preservation of evidence and the chain of custody, testifying in court proceedings, and performing related work. Positions may serve as a patrol officer, detective squad member, crime prevention officer, or in some police organizations as a lead officer on an assigned shift.
Police Officer Trainee:
Applicants who do not meet the minimum requirements for a Police Officer I, or who are currently in basic law enforcement training (
BLET), may be considered for the position of Police Officer Trainee. Positions at this level will be required to successfully complete
BLET and attain law enforcement officer certification from the NC Law Enforcement Training and Standards Commission at which point they will be considered for advancement to the Police Officer I position.
Minimum Requirements: Minimum of High School diploma or
GED. Ability to qualify for attendance at a State of North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training (
BLET) academy including satisfying all relevant background checks and physical agility requirements as required by the NC Criminal Justice Educational Training and Standards Commission (NC
CIETSC).
Salary Range: $39,462 - $47,297.
Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement. At least probationary certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission as a commissioned police officer. The recruitment salary for this level is $51,660-$55,338.
Police Officer II: Positions at this level are fully functioning officers with two or more years of experience as sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have at least a general certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC
CJETSC). The recruitment salary for this level is $54,243-$58,105.
Police Officer III: Positions at this level are veteran officers with four or more years of experience as sworn local, state, or federal law enforcement officers. Additionally, candidates will have completed North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training and have attained their Intermediate Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission (NC
CJETSC). The recruitment salary for this level is $56,995-$61,010. |

- At least probationary certification from the NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer and successful completion of the appointing agency's designated field training program for newly appointed Campus Police Officers.
Note: Lateral hires who are already certified NC law enforcement officers and not first hired as a Police Officer Trainee may be assigned this classification conditional on successful completion of the field training program designated by the Agency Head. Out-of-state lateral hires must be NC
CJETSC certification eligible. |

Required Qualifications
- Candidate must be at least 20 years of age at the time of appointment; candidate must meet physical and psychological requirements of the North Carolina Criminal Education and Standards Commission, which includes a physical exam, medical exam, psychological exam, and drug test.
- In addition, the UNC Greensboro Police Department requires candidates to possess a valid North Carolina Driver's License; and pass an in-depth background investigation, which includes driver's history and criminal history with no felony convictions, psychological testing, drug screening, and physical.
- Must successfully complete the university's orientation course and a twelve-week department field training program during the probationary period; must satisfactorily complete the state-mandated probationary period.
- The selected candidate must possess the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and deal with the public and representatives of the criminal justice system in a professional manner.
- The candidate(s) for this position will be considered an 'ESSENTIAL' Emergency Duty Employee.
- This means that the position is one that is necessary to ensure University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather and/or other emergency situations, including those that require the University to close.
- As such the employee in this position will be required to report to work according to their usual schedule, or upon notification to report outside of their usual work schedule.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Coordinator and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
