Job Summary

The Koliwad Laboratory in the UCSF Diabetes Center is seeking to hire a Staff Research Associate, level 1 (SRA1) to work on projects related to our basic and translational science focus on adipose (fat) tissue metabolism, inflammation, senescence, and fibrosis, and the impacts of these processes on diseases manifesting in the context of obesity. These areas of interest are explored using a combination of cell-based models, experimental mouse models, human fat tissue, cells, and imaging studies, and associated molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, and bioinformatic approaches to analyze gene- and cell-specific effects.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $26.00 - $31.04 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with basic biochemical assays, tissue culture, molecular biology techniques, high-throughput sequencing, programming such as python/R, histology and basic animal handling experience (may be that which is acquired while in school).
  • Methodological knowledge on how to optimize the molecular biology, protein biochemistry, and cellular assays to be performed
  • Mouse handling and colony management

Preferred Qualifications


  • BA/BS degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related science
  • Basic skills in statistical analysis and the use of relevant statistical software.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of molecular cloning.
  • Knowledge of mouse genetics and husbandry.
  • Basic mammalian tissue culture techniques.
  • Basic understanding of trouble-shooting experiments and problem solving.
  • Basic understanding of tissue sectioning, histology, staining and imaging.
  • Preparation of scientific figures using Power Point, Adobe Illustrator, and/or similar programs.
