JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a full-time, in-residence, non-tenure track Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor or Professor of Practice position (rank determined based on background and qualifications under AC21) in Energy Engineering (ENENG) for the 2025-26 academic year. This is a 9-month academic appointment paid over twelve months, funded for three years, with the possibility of renewal. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.

Energy Engineering, housed in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, is an exciting major at Penn State that equips students with strong foundational knowledge and exposes them to many different energy systems. It is the first ABET-accredited 4-year Energy Engineering major in the United States, and our faculty strives to provide a unique, dynamic educational experience. The major maintains a modern curriculum that prepares students to play an impactful role in the global energy transition. Our graduates go on to work in industry, government, and academia.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to teach up to six undergraduate courses per year, depending on needs and other service work in the Department. Topics of these courses may include any combination of the following subjects based on the candidate's expertise: energy storage and distribution, materials for energy applications, hydrogen and fuel cells, geothermal, electrochemistry and corrosion, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, risk analysis and optimization, renewable energy systems (such as wind, solar, hydropower, etc.) and electric power systems. We seek a candidate who can teach a subset of these course topics as needed by the program. Courses are primarily offered through resident instruction, and there are opportunities for teaching online through the World Campus delivery systems. Additional responsibilities may include moving in-person courses online, updating course materials or developing new course materials, assisting with curriculum design and assessment, and academic advising.

Requirements and Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. degree by the appointment start date in Engineering or a related major, with teaching experience in undergraduate courses. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge and background in energy systems through teaching, research, or industrial experiences. Industry experience and evidence of commitment to high-quality teaching and mentoring students at the undergraduate level are a plus.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter documenting their qualifications for the position, a statement of their teaching philosophy, a statement of diversity, equity, and inclusion, a current curriculum vitae, and the names, email addresses, and telephone numbers of three references. Full review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Applicants will be reviewed based on their background, experience, and educational credentials. Questions about the position may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Eugene Morgan (eugene.morgan@psu.edu).
