Job Summary

In partnership with the Medical Director, CRS, the Clinical Research Services (CRS) and reporting to the Director of Program Administration, the Nursing Director will provide strategic, administrative, operational, and financial direction of a multi-site clinical network across four campuses: Parnassus, SFVAMC, Mission Bay, and ZSFG. The incumbent is additionally responsible for developing partnerships with regional affiliates with potential oversight of the clinical research units at those affiliates.

The incumbent will lead the analysis, planning and strategic formation of CTSI clinical program goals in partnership with the CRS Medical Director and Director of Program Administration, and will oversee and prioritize the responsibilities of the Assistant Director of Nursing and Assistant Director of Operations. The incumbent serves as a role model for professional nursing practice and clinical support roles, with responsibility for the management, supervision, and development of clinical staff across the four campuses.

The clinical and operational management of these units requires understanding of FDA regulations and IRB requirements, including specialized CITI certification (Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection). The incumbent will oversee clinical research protocols that comprise a spectrum of disorders and disease (oncology, hematology, neurology, renal, endocrine, HIV, etc.) which require clinical staff maintain specialized training and certifications that the incumbent oversees. Each unit overseen by the incumbent serves a divergent patient population (adults, pediatrics, veterans, and underserved/at-risk).

The incumbent supports the overall mission of CTSI and UCSF in providing high quality patient care, teaching, and research.

The salary range for this position is $175-246K(final salary will determine on experience, equity, and are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy).

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI) facilitates clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. We do this by providing infrastructure, services and training to enable research to be conducted more efficiently, effectively and in new ways. To advance our mission, we develop broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 8 years of directly related experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with clinical research
  • Academic knowledge and applied background in clinical research philosophy. Applies knowledge of theoretical concepts and business best practices in a trial setting. Proven ability to translate clinical research philosophy into direct and indirect clinical input to design, planning, initiation, execution and reporting of clinical trials
  • Strong knowledge of clinical research concepts, federal, state and local laws and regulations, and industry requirements regarding the proper conduct of clinical trials. In depth theoretical and patient care operational knowledge of clinical and patient safety standards and regulations relating to clinical research including legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments
  • Strong knowledge of all phases of clinical research, from study startup through closeout and primary publication and presentation. Knowledgeable about clinical studies involving complex trial design issues
  • Familiar with the policies, best practices, and standards for effective clinic / center administration. In-depth knowledge of patient population served and the requirements for the delivery of services
  • Ability to develop strategic plans, create benchmarks, integrate programs and functions, and successfully advocate for and integrate best practices in clinical research
  • Demonstrated management skills supervising, maintaining and developing clinical staff within the study team, and acting as a mentor for professional staff and conducting reviews and performance evaluations. Effectively manages multiple important priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other cross-functional teams and people with a wide range of educational backgrounds. Demonstrated ability to interface with commercial, regulatory, federal and other members of an extended study team. Ability to influence / persuade
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. Creatively addresses complex or new problems. Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Strong communicator; includes verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills. Skill in analyzing and presenting data and strategy to relevant team, governance, external consultant, and regulatory / oversight meetings
  • Demonstrated ability to organize research work functions in an efficient and effective manner. Great organizational skills applied to personal work and improving organization of assigned staff and trial
  • Expert user of the campus' clinical information and documentation application programs. Technical proficiency in project management software

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's Degree
  • ANCC certification as a Nurse Executive and ACRP certification in Clinical Research
  • ACLS certification
  • Knowledge about affiliation organizations and how to partner and engage them in CRS/UCSF activities

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California and / or licensure in relevant clinical specialty
  • BLS certification
  • ONS certification for Chemotherapy and Biotherapy or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • CITI Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection
