Job Summary

Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) seeks to hire a collaborative and community-oriented Special Collections Librarian who will report to the chair of Academic and Community Engagement. This position requires a dynamic individual who demonstrates a passion for acquiring, preserving, and promoting the archival materials that support the teaching, learning, and research objectives of the university and that represent the Southwest Florida community. The successful candidate will be instrumental to the University Archives and Special Collections' efforts in building special collections; in collaborating with unit colleagues to shape the Archives' online presence; and marketing collections and services to the FGCU community and the public.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Appraises potential additions to the collection and makes recommendations for acquisition of new collections and de-accessioning of existing collections.
  • Facilitates user access by providing reference services, describing archival material, and overseeing the digitization of special collections materials.
  • Promotes collections through exhibits, publications, presentations, and instructional sessions.
  • Cultivates partnerships with campus and external organizations, such as other libraries, historical societies, museums, and archives to enhance the visibility and impact of special collections.
  • Engages in relevant professional activities as a library faculty member including maintaining professional knowledge and skills through continued education, research, scholarship, and service.
  • Engages in continuous improvement activities including assessment, analysis and planning of the department's resources and services to ensure they adequately and appropriately achieve the archives' mission.
  • Collaborates with faculty to integrate archival materials into the curriculum and provide instructional sessions that enhance student's educational experiences.
  • Hires and manages student staff to process collections and assist in exhibitions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in library science or equivalent from an accredited program.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a special collections librarian or similar position (Assistant Rank: 2 years of experience; Associate Rank: 4 or more years of experience).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in archival principles, practices, and preservation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated scholarly contribution, knowledge, and service.
  • Proficiency in relevant cataloging and metadata standards, such as MARC, DACS, DublinCore, METS, and/or MODS
  • Experience with digital initiatives and digitization projects.
  • Experience in fundraising and grant writing.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of professional initiatives and flexibility required for successful teamwork in an academic or special library environment.
  • Knowledge and ability to use technology in distance learning and university teaching.
  • Knowledge of best practices of ensuring representation, a sense of belonging, and removing barriers in library services and collections for all members of the communities we serve.
  • Ability to collaborate both within and outside the university to develop key partnerships.
  • Ability to work effectively with and provide library services to a varied academic community.
  • Ability to engage in continued scholarship, and service to the university, community, and librarianship.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and outreach skills.
