Job Summary

Provides technical leadership and direction to the Computer Science team in integrating various modeling components, programming and software development for the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model (FPHLM) project. Works closely with the team in the development of an efficient model to simulate and predict how, where and when hurricanes form, their wind speed, the damage caused to typical building structures, and how much of the loss will be paid by the insurers. Formulates and defines system scope, objectives and coding based on team needs and a thorough understanding of business systems and modeling requirements. Devises or modifies procedures to solve complex problems including coding and efficient modeling runs. Performs analysis of business and user needs, documents requirements, and translates them into proper system requirement specifications. Possesses full technical knowledge of various modeling components and coding, as well as considers the business implications of the application of technology to insurance business environment.

  • Works closely with the Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI in the day-to-day operational activities of the FPHLM. Advises the PI on technical changes/modifications and improvements. Develops and implements short and long-term operational plan for the FPHLM.
  • Provides technical leadership and guidance to the team in integrating modeling components, programming, and software development for the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model (FPHLM).
  • Develops, implements, and recommends operating procedures and design approaches to solve complex problems for the project.
  • Responsible for the development/coding of FPHLM software and efficient communications with the other disciplines to seamlessly integrate the various modeling components.
  • Develops and maintains big data distributed computing infrastructure and software to efficiently process large amounts of data used in the FPHLM.
  • Develops, maintains and further automates the web-based data processing pipeline to generate required outputs and documents for the FPHLM.
  • Provides leadership to the technical team performing programming, database management, software engineering and analytic work.
  • Leads the large-scale software system development and integration. Troubleshoots the nuances of large-scale enterprise projects with a continuous development cycle.
  • Maintains knowledge and overviews expertise on current industry software and system development to support research requirements. Makes recommendation on improving the efficiency and performance of the risk model.
  • Serves as the project technical lead and ensures deadlines and project milestones are met while maintaining product quality while managing and overseeing support to resolve application issues.
  • Writes technical reports and co-authors peer-reviewed journals to present programming methodology, results and recommendations.
  • Leads a team of graduate assistants, temporary employees and other researchers to solve both functional and system issues.
  • Interprets and implements policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and eight (8) years of experience in related field.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experienced in large-scale system development and integration.
  • Highly proficient in Java, C, C++, and Linux shell programming, e.g., bash, cshell, and awk.
  • Competent in web technologies, e.g., JSP, Servlets, PHP, Ajax, JavaScript, and JQuery.
  • Proficient in Database concepts in PostgreSQL, e.g., server installation, maintenance, complex data types, indexes, schema modeling, stored procedures, and user administration.
  • Preferred experience in distributed computing, e.g., Spark, and Hadoop.
  • Experienced in Software Testing practices and documentation.
  • Proficient in Unix, Linux, and Windows Operating Systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, e.g., style and references management and track changes in Word; graphs, and formulas.
