Summary of Objective:

Packaging Engineer Supervisor would support PCI's mission to provide the industry leading experience to clients, developing and commercializing solutions to optimize the delivery of lifesaving medicines and support better health outcomes for patients around the world. Reporting to department Director, successful incumbent would lead PCI's Package Testing Services offering by overseeing the development, research and performance qualifications of packaging systems to ensure product integrity and package optimization goals are met. The incumbent would be responsible for managing the workflow and resources dedicated to packaging evaluations, package performance testing execution and results reporting. While giving instruction to and overseeing the work of Package Testing Engineers and interns, the incumbent would plan, prioritize, schedule and monitor testing services conducted internally and through external testing partners. The Principal Package Testing Lead would regularly provide recommendations, guidance and valuable subject matter expertise during the package development process while having direct engagement with customers, coordinating with vendors, suppliers and with multiple internal stakeholders to meet desired project outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The essential duties and responsibilities include the following but other duties may be assigned.

  • Effectively plans, delegates and oversees daily activities of Package Testing Engineers and interns ensuring testing services commitments stay on schedule, within budget and deliverables meet required quality and regulatory standards.

  • Supports strategy to expand and sustain team core competency levels and fosters ongoing training and SME development culture.

  • Helps create and facilitate standard work instructions for package performance testing activities conducted in the PCI Package Testing Lab.

  • Responsible for the development, tracking, and budgeting O&M plan for package testing equipment.

  • Coordinates and monitors testing activities conducted off site and maintains favorable business relationships with multiple testing service suppliers and consultants.

  • Uses knowledge base to recommend, specify and validate new packaging designs.

  • Responsible for meeting Package Testing Services operational and financial KPI's.

  • Uses standard methods and procedures to evaluate package designs. Engages customers to assess current packaging systems capabilities and makes recommendations for optimal solutions.

  • Ensures that new packaging designs, existing package improvements, specifications, and materials will conform to current PCI operating methods and packaging machinery and will meet the required standards for product safety.

  • Expected to have high degree of understanding of current industry standards for package performance testing activities: Distribution Simulation, Shipping Lane Qualification, Human Factors, Usability, Child Resistance & Adult Friendly testing.

  • Works closely in collaboration with functional teams and stakeholders; Sales, Estimation, Project Management, Purchasing, Engineering, and others to quote, win and support the execution of Design Services and Commercial Packaging projects.

  • May use advanced software and tools to design/evaluate individual packaging components and/or to create complete packaging systems/solutions. May use software to perform life cycle analysis and environmental impact evaluation on packaging systems.

  • Reviews and edits structural elements to ensure that they meet customer requests and PCI operational requirements.

  • Performs feasibility studies in on-site Package Testing Lab, including management of equipment maintenance and safety practices.

  • Creates and maintains digital asset library of industry standards and regulations related to package performance testing, updating when necessary to remain current.

  • Supports internal corporate and marketing activities as needed.

  • This position may require overtime and/or weekend work.

  • Knowledge of and adherence to all PCI, cGMP, and GCP policies, procedures, rules

  • Attendance to work is an essential function of this position.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by department Director.

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering and/or 5+ years related experience and/or training.

  • Basic Mathematical Skills

  • Advanced Computer Skills: Ability to perform the most complex computer tasks and operate various computer programs.

  • Full Professional Proficiency: Ability to speak, read, and write fluently and accurately on all levels pertinent to professional needs.

  • High Reasoning: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where there is only limited standardization.

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions that may be provided in various forms.

  • It is expected Principal Package Testing Lead would be highly proficient in drafting, reviewing and approving reports.

  • Expected to be experienced in managing or executing package performance testing activities: Distribution Simulation (ASTM/D4169) , Shipping Lane Qualification, Human Factors, Usability, Child Resistance & Adult Friendly testing.

  • Pharma Packaging Engineering or Consumer Goods Experience.

Preferred:

  • Ability to effectively present information to various people as the job requires.

  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.

  • Ability to display strategic, original thinking and creativity.
