MTEI Associate Director, Cornell Engineering Undergraduate Programs

The Colleges of Engineering and Computer and Information Sciences at Cornell University invite applications for an Associate Director for the McCormick Teaching Excellence Institute (MTEI, https://mtei.engineering.cornell.edu/). MTEI's mission is collaborative, developing teaching excellence in a time efficient manner for faculty. The Associate Director will be a non-tenure track faculty member at the rank of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, depending on experience and qualifications. Depending on the successful candidate's background, there is a possibility of working with an engineering or CIS department to occasionally teach or co-teach a course. The position has the flexibility to be either an academic year (9-month) or full year (12-month) appointment with an initial appointment of 3 to 5 years, renewable.

Cornell University is located in Ithaca, New York, a city of about 30,000 people in the heart of the Finger Lakes region. With a wide range of cultural and outdoor activities, the pleasures of both city and country are close at hand. Cornell is an extraordinary community shaped by a collaborative approach and innovative culture; a founding commitment to diversity and inclusion; a synergistic mix of rural and urban campuses; and a land-grant legacy of public engagement. The College of Engineering recently codified these shared values as part of its strategic planning process.

Cornell Engineering has a long history of distinction, creativity and impact. The college enrolls a diverse and talented student body that includes 3,200+ undergraduate students and 2100+ graduate and professional students, and it has over 46,000 living alumni around the globe. Cornell Engineering is home to a diverse, collaborative, and dedicated 200+ tenured and tenure-track faculty, 50+ lecturers dedicated to teaching, plus research faculty and professors of practice who work each day to change the world. Faculty span 10 departments, schools and programs with a footprint in both Ithaca and New York City. Cornell Engineering's undergraduate program is the largest and highest ranked in the Ivy League. It has incredible depth with 14 majors and 20 minors, and it is the first engineering college of its size and stature to have reached gender parity among students.

The Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, CIS, is a community of people committed to tackling some of the world's biggest challenges by working together across multiple colleges and two Cornell campuses. Cornell Bowers CIS is home to the three academic departments that power the information economy: Computer Science, Information Science, and Statistics and Data Science. It also shares faculty with Cornell Tech and is a partner in the department of Computational Biology. The college is known for bold new ideas expressed in innovative computing and information technologies, groundbreaking textbooks, inspiring curricula, imaginative experiments, and entrepreneurial and commercial impact. More than twelve percent of the Cornell undergraduate student body is a CIS major, and 76% of all undergraduates on the Ithaca campus take at least one CIS course during their time at Cornell. Bower's CIS has more than 100 faculty and graduated 1100 students in 2023 across undergraduates, Master's and PhD students.

MTEI currently employs a full time Director, an Administrative Assistant, and several Faculty Teaching Fellows who have 10% appointments in MTEI (while full time teaching in departments). In addition, MTEI affiliated Faculty Research Fellows are fully embedded in engineering departments as tenure track faculty with research specialization in engineering education topics.

The Associate Director will contribute to MTEI programs and work with faculty on improving and innovating in teaching across the departments in both colleges. Tasks will include a mix of writing teaching tips, leading workshops, observing classes and providing pointers to faculty, reviewing student course feedback to support course improvements, and working with faculty on course design or redesign efforts. MTEI especially works with new faculty to ensure they have a strong start to teaching. The Associate Director and the instructors that will use MTEI as a resource will be teaching a highly diverse student population so inclusive teaching is essential.

Depending on program needs, the role might include work on special projects and data gathering of mutual interest to the Assoc. Director and MTEI.
