Job Summary:

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Marc Slutzky at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, in the Department of Neurology. We are actively seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join our research team on an exciting new project investigating functional brain mapping for neurosurgery. This project is seeking to understand precisely the effects of electrocortical stimulation (ECS) on cortical neurons and networks. ECS has been used for 80+ years as a way to identify "eloquent" areas of the cortex to avoid resecting during brain surgeries, yet it is still not clear what is actually being activated or inhibited in the cortex. It is also used for neuromodulation in several neurological disorders. This position and project will involve collaborations with the Miri and Contractor labs at Northwestern, as well as with Johns Hopkins University, Indiana University, and the University of Iowa.

Please Note: Occasional weekends and evenings as requested and with some possible travel, as required

Specific Responsibilities:

* Performing two photon calcium imaging experiments with simultaneous electrocortical stimulation (ECS) to understand ECS' effects different cortical layers.

* sing designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs (DREADDs) and transgenic animals to examine ECS' effects on different cortical cell types.

* Understand effects of different ECS parameters on its neuronal effects

* Analyze data, synthesize results, and publish papers

Miscellaneous

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

* PhD in neuroscience, neurobiology, physiology, biomedical engineering, or related field

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

* Experience working with awake laboratory animals strongly preferred.

* At least some experience with 2-photon calcium imaging

Preferred Qualifications:

* PhD in neuroscience, neurobiology, physiology, biomedical engineering, or related field

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

* Experience with DREADDs preferred but not essential.

* Some electrophysiology experience/background

* Computational neuroscience skills/modelling skills somewhat preferred
