The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a SNAP-Ed Assistant for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The successful candidate will provide education support and outreach for the SNAP-Ed program in Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, or Mercer Counties. County. The goal of the position is to help program participants improve their food security; dietary quality; physical activity; and food safety behaviors.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education ( SNAP-Ed) is a federally funded grant program that supports evidence-based nutrition education and obesity prevention interventions and projects for persons eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP) through complementary direct education, multi-level interventions, and community and public health approaches to improve nutrition.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Supports and teaches community based direct education lessons to adults and youth, using pre-approved curricula, under the direction of the supervisor and in accordance with federal, state and university guidelines that govern the SNAP-Ed. program.
  • Creates social media and website content on identified topics that promote nutrition, health, food security and wellness for SNAP-eligible audiences.
  • Updates and maintains outreach databases, organize administrative files, scan and process paperwork, and compile materials, food and supplies for classes.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.


Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid Driver's License or reliable transportation to various demonstration sites.
Preferred Qualifications

  • College student majoring in nutrition (preferred), health education, public health, health professions, food policy, family and consumer sciences, or related discipline.
  • Bilingual: Spanish/English preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interest in working with adults and youth to improve nutrition, food security, health, and well- being.
  • Must be comfortable teaching and interacting directly with adults and youth using hands-on lessons that use food, taste-testing, and cooking as part of the curricula.
  • Virtual outreach tools such as Zoom, WebEX, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube.
  • Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Computers.
  • Cooking Equipment.


Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must be able to carry 25 pounds rearrange tables and chairs.
  • Office may be located at Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Mercer counties.

Special Conditions

  • Must be able to work occasional evenings or weekends.
  • Ability to travel statewide.
