Reporting to the Chair of Surgery, the Division Chief will have the goal of advancing the field of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery through patient care, practice innovation, research, and education. The Division Chief will be charged with providing leadership and oversight of a diverse and talented faculty at a Level 1 academic Trauma Center, for the development of clinical, outcomes and health services research. The ability to work collaboratively within the Department, as well as across departments and schools to develop clinical and research initiatives are considered top priorities for the Division.
The Chief will be hired as an Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Serve as Division Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, providing leadership and day-to-day oversight of the Division to advance the strategic growth and development of an academic surgical division in clinical care, education, research and community outreach;
* Oversee all aspects of patient care delivery related to the Division's responsibility to University Hospital (UH) inpatient and ambulatory services, and beyond UH at all other affiliate practice sites;
* Maintain the Eric Munoz Trauma Center's Level 1 Accreditation with the
ACS;
* Expand evidenced based clinical programs in the delivery of surgical Critical Care at University Hospital;
* Work with the Trauma Medical Director to further enhance the reputation of the Eric Munoz Trauma Center as a provider of premier trauma care in New Jersey and the region;
* Expand evidenced based clinical programs in the delivery of emergency general surgery at University Hospital and St. Barnabas Medical Center;
* Oversee all aspects of patient care delivery related to the Division's responsibility to University Hospital (UH) inpatient and ambulatory services, and beyond UH at all other affiliate practice sites;
* Responsible for the oversight of quality, performance and program development direction of the faculty with respect to clinical practice, education, community engagement, philanthropy, and research mission;
* Monitor quality and
LOS indicators and identifying strategies for continuous improvement;
* Work with the residency program director to facilitate high quality, cost effective care in all locations;
* Increase collaboration across critical care services within University Hospital (UH) to lead innovative approaches to clinical care;
* Expand regionally to other health systems to meet critical care and acute care surgery needs;
* Serve as an Attending on the trauma service; take 4-5 nights per month of call;
* Maintain a clinical practice in trauma, critical care and acute care surgery;
* Serve as core faculty with the
AAST/
ACGME-approved acute care surgical fellowship;
* Serve as a mentor/teaching Attending Physician to residents, fellows and junior faculty on the trauma,
ACS,
SICU inpatient and faculty practice services;
* Develop a research and scholarship focus; develop and lead a funded research program and enhance scholarship opportunities for division faculty and trainees;
* Mentor and develop faculty in all missions;
* Responsible for the oversight of quality, performance and program development direction of the faculty with respect to clinical practice, education, community engagement, philanthropy, and research mission;
* Monitor quality and
LOS indicators and identifying strategies for continuous improvement;
* Improve academic productivity of divisional faculty through expanded clinical research and publications;
* Regularly attend the monthly division chief meetings and other standing and ad hoc committee meetings as assigned by the chair;
* Conduct annual performance evaluations of all faculty in your division and establish annual goals and objectives for individual faculty members;
* Complete billing, required training, time studies, and other required hospital or Rutgers related surveys on a timely basis;
* Advance the mission and stature of the division and department through involvement in scholarly activity, including grant-writing, grand rounds, advocacy and/or participation on local/regional/national committees or organizations;
* Participate in the planning, implementation, or administration of health programs or standard in hospitals, businesses, or communities for treatment of injury or illness.
* In conjunction with the Department Chair, assist in the medical staff appointment and re-appointment credentialing process for Surgical Oncology Division, and ensure that appropriate quality data is collected as required by Joint Commission standards of Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (
OPPE);
* Supervise the practice of all adjunct medical staff members (PA's, APN's, etc.) in the Division of Urology in their clinical duties or appoint an appropriate designee(s) to perform this supervision with a defined reporting structure;
* Ensure that division physicians actively participate in the clinical and education programs for division/divisional residents and fellows, as required by
RPC/
ACGME;
* Ensure that physician time studies and all evaluations of performance as required/requested are completed for each physician when required;
* In a partnership with the Chair/Vice Chair, oversee timely charge submission and denial resolution; |
