The technology would use wearable sensor devices such as smart rings, smartwatches, and sensor-embedded earphones for tracking hand, body, and facial motion for ASL recognition. The technology will rely on sensor fusion, machine learning, and natural language processing for performing the translation. Bidirectional communication between an ASL signer and a non-ASL speaker would be integrated into the system. The intern would work with Ph.D. students and faculty at Penn State and Gallaudet to bring their domain expertise in ASL in developing highly accurate technology for ASL recognition and translation. This would include activities such as stress testing the system, understanding the errors made by the technology as it continues to evolve and providing feedback for improvement, design of a user-study with expert ASL signers for validation, etc.
