JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Mathematics, in the Eberly College of Science, has vacancies available for Lead Mathematics Learning Assistants (LAs) during the Fall 2024 semester. Lead Mathematics

LAs will all work under the supervision of the Mathematics Learning Assistants Program coordinators to help mentor and provide support to new mathematics LAs, observe evening sessions for the course they serve as a lead LA, and meet with the Mathematics Learning Assistants Program coordinators.

Lead Mathematics LA will also work in one of the three capacities:

  • Work under the supervision of the course coordinator to help facilitate students' learning and help organize LAs in the coordinated sections from a 0-level math course to a 200-level math course.
  • Work under the supervision of a faculty member to help facilitate students' learning in a specific mathematics course.
  • Work under the supervision of a faculty member to help facilitate students' learning in a specific mathematics section reserved for mathematics, physics, astrophysics, and mathematics education majors.

The selected candidates will work up to 10 hours per week as follows:

  • Facilitate students' in-class discussions during group work and student-centered activities (2 - 4 hours),
  • Assist students outside of class, holding problem-solving sessions (2 hours),
  • Participate in weekly instructional team meetings (1 hour),
  • Assist new LAs in the course, observe evening LA sessions, and meet with the program coordinators (1 - 3 hours)

The ideal candidate will have a strong mathematical background in Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations, experience assisting students in group work settings, strong communication skills, and an interest in facilitating students' learning of mathematics.
