Job Summary

Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy's six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.

The McGuire Nuclear Station Corporate Design Engineering Manager for Instrumentation and Control is responsible for management of the assigned capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the McGuire Nuclear Station, and coordinates with other CDE managers/staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet station needs and milestone requirements. This position is based at McGuire Nuclear Station in Huntersville, NC.

This position requires collaboration with stakeholders including senior management members at the assigned sites and across the nuclear fleet. The incumbent will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to manage a diverse team of nuclear professionals by providing oversight for complex technical tasks including design development, analysis, testing, and field implementation. Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision to a blended team of assigned technical resources supporting the McGuire nuclear station including oversight of a large contingent engineering workforce.
  • Ensures technical rigor and quality and provides approval of Design Engineering organization design products including those developed by external engineering vendors (EOCs) for the McGuire station.
  • Coordinates with the Instrumentation & Control Design Manager Working Group to achieve fleet and team level resource planning to meet project schedules and milestones across the fleet with quality.
  • Provides interface with in-house and external stakeholders during the development of design products.
  • Performs observations and provides coaching as necessary to improve performance.
  • Collaborates with other departments to support engineering management and equipment reliability initiatives.
  • Works with employees to create Individual Development Plans (IDPs) to support their career progression and improve performance.
  • Documents periodic ongoing conversations with each direct report to ensure adequate progress toward goals is being made.
  • Motivates team to display leadership and team effectiveness attributes that are foundational to excellent organizational effectiveness.
  • Fulfills an Emergency Response Organization (ERO) role.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • 7 years of professional level experience in nuclear services, nuclear plant operations, or nuclear engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous nuclear supervisory experience.
  • Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) License or Certification
  • Previous Design Engineering experience.
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills.
  • Excellent analytical ability, consultative, and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with personnel at all levels of the organization (client, staff, management, etc.).
  • Demonstrated project management or leadership skills.

Specific Requirements

  • Nuclear Plant unescorted access.
  • This position requires having an Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibility which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Occasional work during nights and weekends or extended workdays may be necessary to support nuclear regulatory compliance, unit outages, or emergent equipment issue callouts.
  • Typical office environment with flexibility to support plant operations. Must be able to work in an industrial environment safely.
  • This is an onsite position and is not approved for remote or hybrid stance.
