Overview

The New Orleans, LA Field Services Unit is looking for a Bridge Inspection INTERN with interest in an experiential learning related to bridge inspection and preservation.

Field Services Unit - Inspection and Repairs Section

Primary responsibilities include hands-on condition inspection of major railroad and highway structures. The development of repair plans to address deficient conditions, and construction engineering and inspection of bridge repairs. M&M's Inspection and Repairs Section is looking for individuals interested in specialized access with our rope access team.

Positions Available -



  • Internship


Ideal Candidate will:



  • Be working towards a BS/MS in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited College or University


General Responsibilities (under the guidance and supervision of Experienced Engineers)



  • Primary duties will involve bridge inspection, condition assessment and reporting, repair design and detailing, emergency response, and on-site monitoring of bridge repairs.
  • This position offers hands-on engagement with small, medium, and large bridge structures and opportunity for technical analysis/overview of structures. Candidates should ideally be detail oriented, be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of structural fundamentals and be eager to begin a career working with bridges.
  • Perform field inspections as part of a team of engineers.
  • Prepare inspection reports with recommendations for maintenance and repair for all types and sizes of highway and railroad bridges, including fixed bridges, such as suspension and cable-stayed bridges, trusses, girder and beam bridges, and movable bridges.
  • Preparation and detailing of repair plans, specifications, construction cost estimates, and bidding documents
  • Bridge construction oversight and monitoring, inspecting, and documenting individual activities performed by the contractor to monitor compliance with overall contract specifications, plans and other contract provisions.
  • Emergency response to bridge related emergencies, as needed.


Working Conditions



  • Position requires a combination of both office and field duties.
  • Position involves working conditions such as climbing on superstructures and substructures of bridges.
  • Requires a certain amount of physicality and a comfort level with heights for the inspection portion of this position.
  • Position requires a varying amount of travel with overnight stays, dependent upon assignment and available work.


Skills and Abilities



  • Have a basic understanding of structural engineering fundamentals, including being able to identify basic load paths and have a general understanding of how loads affect structures and their members.
  • Must have a good command of the English language with good oral and written communication skills. Technical writing proficiency is preferred.
  • Have an understanding and working knowledge of how to read design plans and details, shop drawings, and as-built plans.
  • Must be physically capable of climbing ladders and stairways, working from walkways and platforms at high elevations, such as on high bridge superstructures and working from aerial access equipment.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite, CADD (AutoCAD and/or MicroStation) is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of how to interpret construction specifications and manufacturer's technical data.
  • Working knowledge and familiarity with construction contracts and with construction management processes including communication, documenting procedures, and quality control and quality assurance procedures and responsibilities
