Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) brings a synergy between the best medical education, research and patient care. The VP of Facilities and Operations is a crucial role providing direction and strategic leadership to the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) across the four missions: research, clinical care, education and community.

The leader will direct and oversee all facilities and campus operational activities of MCW including Facilities Engineering and Maintenance, Planning, Design and Construction, Public Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety to maintain a safe, productive, and efficient environment for all stakeholders of MCW. The team is comprised of approximately 70 employees plus partner personnel.

MCW's space is comprised of nearly 50 acres of owned land and almost 2 million square feet of space spanning office, wet lab, outpatient clinical, and other types of space inclusive of owned and leased space. MCW has two regional campuses (Central Wisconsin and Green Bay), several joint venture buildings, leased building and a host of leased spaces across Wisconsin.

The VP works collaboratively with project executives in planning and execution of building projects and major renovations as well as ensuring excellence of facilities operations. The leader engages key stakeholders across the missions to drive strategic planning, contract negotiations, progress and performance, and oversight of a multitude of vendors/service providers.

MCW, Froedtert Health, Children's Wisconsin and Versiti jointly oversee the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center (MRMC). The MRMC is a joint enterprise that operates and provides shared infrastructure to all members of the campus. The VP will represent MCW on the MRMC to set a long-term strategy for the campus and ensure cost-effective services are provided to all members of the campus. Additionally, MCW collaborates with the MRMC members on specific facilities projects. As part of this, the leader works directly with counterparts at the other organizations to provide strategic leadership and operational execution for the space/facilities shared between the MCW and the other organization(s).

The leader will have responsibility for an operating budget of $25-30M plus construction, renovation and capital budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, develops, and manages capital projects related to operations and maintenance, renovations, new construction and campus infrastructure.
  • Monitors and maintains operational and capital budgets including maintenance, operations, safety, utilities and capital infrastructure.
  • Develops and maintains the campus master plan and working with the finance department to align with long range financial plans.
  • Serves as the facilities leader and strategic partner on all matters related to facilities, operations, and infrastructure at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
  • Collaborate with mission leaders including deans, department chairs and center directors on campus facilities needs and requirements to help ensure optimized execution of the mission strategic plans.
  • Direct the activities and provides leadership to diverse functional areas including Facilities Engineering and Maintenance, Planning, Design and Construction, Public Safety, and Environmental Health and Safety to ensure safe and optimum operation through proper resource allocations.
  • Represents the Medical College of Wisconsin on various external committees and boards at the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center (MRMC) including MRMC Thermal, Water, Infrastructure, Maintenance Operations and Land Use, Transportation, Transit and Parking, and Emergency Planning.
  • Leads the team and works closely with Office of General Counsel on negotiating and managing leases and various operating agreements.
  • Collaborative plan and execute joint facilities projects and shared spaces with Froedtert Health, Children's Wisconsin and other partners.
  • Works with committees to develop and maintain policies and procedures related space use and management.
  • Overall responsible for security operations to maintain a safe public environment for employees, students, patients and visitors at all times and maintain the physical security of University property and assets.
  • Overall responsible for ensuring laboratory safety, compliance with lab protocols, and effective training and communication regarding lab safety issues and compliance with all health and safety regulations.
  • Monitors preventive maintenance and quality control programs to ensure efficient plant operations, especially HVAC systems, and to ensure the long-term viability of each building.
  • Responsible for developing, analyzing, and making recommendations to senior leaders on capital plans and initiatives.
  • Motivate and lead a high-performance team; recruit and retain key managers; and coach direct reports as appropriate for career development.

Appropriate experience may be substituted on equivalent basis.

Minimum Education: Master's Degree

Minimum Experience: 10 years
