Job Summary Provides comprehensive primary care services independently to essentially healthy women in accordance with approved and recognized standards for midwifery practice according to the Standards for the Practice of Midwifery developed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives and within the clinical guidelines for midwifery practice developed by Prisma Health and the Department of OB/GYN. This care is provided in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Provides care to women with selected medical complications in collaboration with Obstetricians-Gynecologists according to established clinical practice guidelines.Accountabilities
1-A: OUTPATIENT/AMBULATORY OBSTETRICAL SERVICES: *Provides comprehensive clinical care services independently to essentially healthy women during the antepartum and postpartum periods. *Evaluates patients, performing complete history and physical examinations and develops a treatment plan for pregnancy and birth. *Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests as indicated according to patient's condition and develops appropriate treatment plan. *Performs selected diagnostic testing on obstetrical patients as indicated by maternal/fetal condition. *Evaluates and manages care of mothers and newborns during immediate postpartum period. Assists and supports mothers during breastfeeding according to principles of the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative. Evaluates and treats breastfeeding disorders. Collaborates with pediatricians when indicated when developing treatment plan for newborn. 1-B: INPATIENT OBSTETRICAL SERVICES: *Diagnoses labor and admits and discharges low risk obstetrical patients to intrapartum, antepartum and postpartum obstetrical units: *Performs admission and discharge history and physical examination. *Develops treatment plan for triage, labor, birth and postpartum management. *Evaluates patients and orders medications, treatments, and procedures for induction of labor. Places intravaginal prostaglandins for cervical ripening. Places foley bulb intracervically for cervical ripening. *Provides continuous labor support throughout active labor, including physical, emotional and psychological support for the laboring woman. *Performs amniotomy. *Applies fetal scalp electrodes. Inserts intrauterine pressure catheters. *Monitors and evaluates fetal heart rate tracing during labor and orders appropriate treatments and procedures as indicated according to fetal tolerance of labor. *Administers local and pudendal anesthesia. *Independently manages normal labor and birth. Performs uncomplicated vaginal deliveries. *Initiates emergency procedures during obstetrical emergencies. *Performs episiotomies. Repairs episiotomies and first and second degree perineal and vaginal lacerations. *Provides first assisting at cesarean sections. *Recognizes deviations from normal and provides care in collaboration with physicians to develop a treatment plan for patients with selected complications of labor and postpartum. 1-C: OUTPATIENT/AMBULATORY GYNECOLOGICAL SERVICES: *Performs complete history and physical exams, on essentially healthy women from adolescence through menopause. *Develops treatment plan for well-woman gynecological patient, including contraceptive management, pre-conception care, initial infertility evaluation, peri-menopause and treatment of common gynecological disorders and complaints. *Prescribes and inserts intrauterine devices for contraceptive management and treatment of selected menstrual bleeding disorders. *Prescribes, inserts and removes contraceptive implants. *Performs diaphragm fitting and prescription for contraceptive management. *Performs surgical or chemical destruction of simple gynecological lesions.
Performs and interprets limited first trimester ultrasound for fetal crown-rump length to establish estimated due date. *Performs and interprets limited third trimester ultrasound for fetal surveillance and testing - obtains amniotic fluid indices, evaluates for placental location, fetal position and performs biophysical profiles. *Performs and interprets fetal non-stress tests for determining fetal health and well-being in the antepartum period. *Performs and interprets saline/wet prep and KOH laboratory microscopy and develops appropriate treatment plan.
*Orders medications and writes prescriptions for treatment of selected medical conditions during pregnancy, birth and postpartum as well as management of contraception and common gynecological conditions. *Orders epidural anesthesia for the laboring patient.
Participates in development of patient education materials and programs.
*Completes necessary documentation/dictation related to clinical care according to policies and procedures of medical records department. *Assists with development, revision and maintenance of Midwifery Clinical Practice Guidelines and Office Policy and Procedures of Greenville Midwifery Care. *Participates in establishment of quality assurance programs for the Division of Midwifery, including maintaining a midwifery client data base and clinical outcomes data set consistent with ACNM Benchmarketing Project.
*Participates in community outreach activities, formal client education programs and marketing and practice promotion activities according to the goals of the midwifery service. *Attends and participates in selected GHS committees/working groups for the benefit of the midwifery service, the Department of OB/GYN and GHS women's services line. *Participates in activities that would further the public's image of the employer.
Participates in operational assessments in search of revenue enhancement, expense reductions, consolidation efficiencies and billing opportunities and participates in response to requests for proposals for managed care contracts. *Completes necessary documentation required for efficient billing and coding procedures.
*Directs other staff in patient care activities. Maintains courteous and cooperative working relationships with all employees, physicians, patients, guarantors and the general public. *Participates in research and continuing education activities. *Attends and participates in departmental Morbidity and Mortality meetings and Grand Rounds sessions as related to clinical midwifery practice. *Responsible for direct supervision of student nurse-midwives, student nurse-practitioniers, and medical students. *Provides education and clinical precepting to obstetrical residents. Supervisory/Management Responsibilities This is a non-management job that report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive. Minimum Requirements Education - Master's degree Midwifery education program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME). Experience - 2 years full-scope midwifery practice Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses South Carolina Official Recognition Nurse Practitioner - NLNP Certification from the National Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education - ACME South Carolina Prescriptive Authority, South Carolina Controlled Substance license; Federal DEA license Other Required Skills and Experience
