Job Summary

The Strategic Relations and Communications Department at CU Boulder invites applications for a Senior Director of Chancellor Communications! The Senior Director is a senior communications leader who serves as the primary writing partner and critical communications adviser to the chancellor and university leadership team. This role is responsible for shaping the chancellor's voice, advancing the university's institutional narrative, and ensuring executive communications are strategic, consistent, compelling, and aligned with the university's mission and priorities.

Beyond delivering exceptional executive communications, the Senior Director will architect and lead the standards, frameworks, processes and infrastructure that define how executive communications operate across the university. This includes establishing editorial standards, strengthening voice consistency, developing effective workflows, and building the systems and partnerships necessary to deliver high-quality communications at scale.

The role requires an uncommon combination of strategic judgment, outstanding writing and editing skills, organizational leadership and the ability to navigate complexity with confidence. The Senior Director must be equally comfortable advising senior leaders on high-stakes communications decisions, developing a compelling narrative from complex information and personally producing polished, publication-ready content across a wide range of formats and channels.

Working in a fast-paced, high-intensity environment, this leader must exercise sound judgment when outcomes are uncertain, make decisions with incomplete information, respond thoughtfully to critique and adapt quickly as priorities evolve. In a lean, high-impact team, the Senior Director will maintain significant hands-on writing responsibilities while setting a high bar for the quality, consistency and effectiveness of executive communications. The Senior Director will supervise and develop a small team, providing clear direction, setting priorities, and fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and editorial excellence. This leader will ensure the team's work is aligned with institutional priorities and consistently meets the highest standards of quality and impact.

This is a role for a builder as much as a practitioner: someone who can establish the systems and standards that enable excellence while consistently delivering it. The successful candidate will bring the editorial authority to protect the chancellor's voice and the strategic perspective to ensure every communication advances the university's broader goals.
