SCOPE:

The Production Supervisor is responsible for the safe, effective, and efficient execution of daily production activities within assigned manufacturing areas. This position provides direct leadership to production employees and is accountable for achieving established Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost (SQDC) objectives, including production schedule attainment, labor productivity, quality performance, and workforce capability.

The Production Supervisor translates the production plan into daily execution, identifies and escalates constraints, drives corrective actions when performance deviates from plan, and partners with Supply Chain, Quality, Engineering, and Maintenance to achieve customer commitments. The supervisor develops employee capability through training, coaching, cross-training, qualification, and performance management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead daily production activities to achieve established safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity targets.
  • Execute the daily and weekly production schedule and maintain clear accountability for schedule attainment, including development and execution of recovery actions when commitments are missed.
  • Plan and allocate labor based on production requirements, employee qualifications, constraints, and priorities; manage staffing and overtime within established guidelines.
  • Lead daily production and tier meetings, review performance against key metrics, assign actions, and ensure timely escalation of issues.
  • Monitor and improve key operating measures including safety performance, schedule attainment, labor efficiency/productivity, first-pass yield, rework/scrap, backlog, and other assigned KPIs.
  • Identify production constraints, material shortages, equipment issues, quality concerns, and other barriers to execution; coordinate with appropriate support functions to drive timely resolution.
  • Ensure employees follow approved standard work, work instructions, fabrication drawings, specifications, welding procedures, quality requirements, and safety procedures.
  • Conduct skills assessments and maintain training, qualifications, certification, and skills-matrix records; develop cross-training plans to improve workforce flexibility.
  • Coach employees and manage performance, attendance, conduct, development, and accountability in accordance with company policies and applicable requirements.
  • Partner with Quality and Engineering to resolve manufacturing and welding-related issues, perform structured root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Drive continuous improvement through standard work, 5S, visual management, waste elimination, problem solving, flow improvement, and Kaizen activities.
  • Ensure welding equipment, tooling, fixtures, and measurement equipment are properly used, maintained, calibrated, and available to support production requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and timely production, labor, training, certification, quality, and other required manufacturing records and system transactions.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through hazard identification, employee engagement, incident investigation, corrective action, and consistent enforcement of safe work practices.
  • Develop workforce capability and succession through coaching, cross-training, qualification, certification, and identification of future team leaders.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required; technical school, Associate's degree, or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of manufacturing experience in a fabrication or welding environment, including 2+ years of direct supervisory or production leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable welding processes, fabrication methods, manufacturing drawings, and quality requirements.
  • Experience leading production teams in a schedule-driven manufacturing environment with accountability for safety, quality, delivery, and productivity performance.
  • AWS (American Welding Society) certification or equivalent professional credential preferred but not required unless specifically needed for assigned technical responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, mentor, train, and evaluate employees across multiple skill levels.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, engineering drawings, specifications, work instructions, and production documentation.
  • Strong leadership, communication, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to use production data and KPIs to identify performance gaps, establish priorities, and drive corrective action.
  • Working knowledge of structured problem-solving methods such as 5 Why, Pareto analysis, root-cause analysis, and corrective action.
  • Working knowledge of Lean manufacturing principles, including standard work, 5S, visual management, waste elimination, flow, and Kaizen.
  • Ability to work effectively across Operations, Supply Chain, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and other support functions.
  • Commitment to maintaining a safe, compliant, respectful, accountable, and efficient work environment.
  • Experience with ATM, Shop Floor Plus, ERP/MRP, MES, or comparable manufacturing systems is a plus.

KEY PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

  • Safety: Consistent adherence to safe work practices, timely closure of safety actions, and active employee engagement in hazard identification.
  • Quality: Achievement of established quality targets with focus on first-pass yield, defect prevention, and reduction of rework and scrap.
  • Delivery: Daily and weekly production schedule attainment with timely escalation and recovery planning for misses.
  • Cost/Productivity: Effective labor utilization, overtime control, productivity improvement, and reduction of non-value-added activity.
  • People: Accurate skills and qualification records, effective cross-training, timely performance feedback, and development of workforce capability.
  • Continuous Improvement: Active ownership of problem solving and measurable improvements in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and process stability.

LEADERSHIP EXPECTATIONS

The Production Supervisor is expected to lead from the floor, maintain visible ownership of daily execution, set clear expectations, address performance gaps promptly, and create an environment in which employees understand the production plan, their individual responsibilities, and how their work contributes to customer commitments.
