Currently recruiting Senior Certified Athletic Trainer professionals to support the 37th Training Wing s Human Performance VIPER II program at Joint Base San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. These senior athletic training positions combine musculoskeletal injury care, rehabilitation, injury prevention, and daily clinical operations oversight at embedded training facilities and assigned sites or squadrons. Work takes place at JBSA-Lackland, Chapman Annex, and Camp Bullis, in clinical facilities and field settings. Normal hours are Monday through Friday, 5: 30 a.M. To 2: 30 p.M., with flexibility for early morning, evening, and weekend training events. The regular schedule does not exceed 40 hours per week or ten consecutive hours per day, including a one-hour lunch. No on-call duty is required. Federal holidays, directed down days, and resiliency days are excluded;AETC Family Days require work.
DUTIES OF THE SENIOR CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER:
- Provide the full range of athletic training services, including injury prevention, clinical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and follow-up within professional scope and approved protocols.
- Examine musculoskeletal injuries and exertional conditions, interpret findings, and develop treatment, referral, activity limitation, and follow-up plans.
- Deliver therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, joint mobilization, hydrotherapy, thermal treatments, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, taping, bracing, and other authorized interventions.
- Develop strength, conditioning, corrective exercise, and functional reconditioning programs for injury prevention, recovery, and human performance improvement.
- Provide training-event medical coverage, emergency triage, first aid, and initial treatment, including BLS, heat illness interventions, bag-valve-mask ventilation, and cervical spine immobilization when indicated and within scope.
- Perform and oversee daily clinical care at the assigned embedded facility or squadron, maintaining timely patient flow and coordination between patients, instructors, and healthcare providers.
- Serve as a daily operations manager and sports medicine point of contact for embedded Staff Athletic Trainers and other Athletic Trainers.
- Coordinate with sports medicine physicians, the Head Athletic Trainer, and Human Performance Squadron leadership to support effective operations across Alternate Training Facilities.
- Review referrals for accuracy, appropriateness, and timely placement, ensuring adherence to referral guidelines and standard operating procedures.
- Identify and help resolve patient safety, privacy, infection control, access-to-care, and administrative concerns through designated leadership channels.
- Ensure athletic training equipment is properly cleaned and sterilized, and report equipment requiring repair or replacement.
- Educate service members on injury prevention, self-rehabilitation, fitness, nutrition related to physical activity, acclimatization, and fluid and electrolyte balance.
- Complete and sign electronic health record documentation within 72 hours and complete three patient care documentation peer reviews by the first day of the month.
- Support program management, meetings, continuous process improvement, outcome tracking, and approved research initiatives.
- Complete government ATV training and operate assigned vehicles as needed for event medical coverage.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE SENIOR CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER:
- Required: May satisfy the education and experience requirement through one of the following pathways:
- Master s degree in Athletic Training from a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Education Program, plus at least five years of experience diagnosing, treating, and/or preventing musculoskeletal injuries in high school, collegiate, professional, or military settings.
- Bachelor s degree in Athletic Training from an accredited university, plus at least eight years of experience diagnosing, treating, and/or preventing musculoskeletal injuries in those settings.
- An education equivalency determination may be requested through the contractor and is subject to Government approval.
- Must possess a current, full, active, and unrestricted Texas athletic trainer license.
- Must maintain current athletic trainer certification through the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) or National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA), as specified in the PWS.
- Must possess in-person Basic Life Support certification accepted by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Online courses do not satisfy the requirement.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen for access to U.S. Government networks.
- Must provide required qualification and security investigative documentation and complete the Government s competency-based review before placement.
- Must meet documented occupational health, physical examination/testing, immunization, and TB screening requirements. The PWS specifies negative two-step TB skin testing or, for individuals with a past positive skin test, a negative chest X-ray within 12 months before beginning services.
- Must be able to demonstrate running techniques, exercises, injury prevention drills, and rehabilitation movements;lift 50 pounds from ground to waist level;and perform recurring bending, stooping, crouching, and stretching.
- Must be able to work in field conditions and varied weather and support assignments within a 40-mile radius. Reassignments require two weeks notice;local travel may occur approximately monthly.
- Must possess a valid U.S. Driver s license and complete required training before operating Government vehicles.
- Must complete required agency training and comply with clinical protocols, patient privacy, infection control, safety, and professional conduct requirements.
