Plan Check Engineer

Education Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification may be considered in lieu of a portion of the educational requirements.
• Strong understanding of civil engineering principles, construction standards, municipal regulations, and engineering plan review.

Experience Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years of professional civil engineering experience, preferably in municipal engineering, land development, public works, grading, drainage, or infrastructure projects.
• Experience reviewing engineering plans, site development projects, stormwater systems, sewer systems, and roadway improvements.
• Ability to coordinate projects with contractors, developers, architects, engineers, and government agencies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of local, state, and federal engineering regulations, codes, and permitting requirements.
• Experience with hydrology and hydraulics analysis, grading plan review, and development approvals.
• Proficiency with engineering software, Microsoft Office applications, and plan review systems.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to train, supervise, and evaluate technical staff.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer-service-oriented approach.

Physical Capabilities

• Ability to conduct field inspections at construction and development sites.
• Capable of walking on uneven terrain, climbing stairs, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to operate a computer and standard office equipment for extended periods.
• Must be able to travel within the jurisdiction to inspect projects and investigate site conditions.

Job Duties

• Review and approve civil engineering plans for residential, commercial, industrial, and land development projects.
• Evaluate grading, drainage, stormwater, sewer, and street improvement plans for compliance with city, state, and regulatory standards.
• Review hydrology and hydraulic studies, verify engineering calculations, and investigate drainage-related issues.
• Coordinate development review processes, including permits, fees, bonding estimates, agreements, and council reports.
• Provide technical guidance to developers, contractors, engineers, architects, and the public regarding engineering requirements and city policies.
• Conduct site inspections, resolve field issues, maintain engineering records, and oversee assigned technical staff to ensure successful project completion.
