Position Description
Please note: this position requires on site part time work in Germantown, WI during the school semester and offers full time in the summer. This is NOT a winter break or summer only internship.

Allient Milwaukee builds TCI branded product and is a dynamic, growing Milwaukee area manufacturer of industry leading products for AC and DC drives.

Job Description
We are seeking an Embedded Software Engineering Intern to support the development and testing of embedded controls and desktop software used in our active and passive harmonic filter product lines.

This position is intended for an Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering student interested in gaining hands-on experience with embedded systems, software development, hardware testing, and power electronics.

The intern will work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to real product development, testing, troubleshooting, and validation activities.

Basic Qualifications
  • Currently working toward a bachelor's degree in computer engineering or electrical engineering for the entire duration of the internship.
  • GPA 3.0 or higher preferred
  • Basic programming experience in C, C++, C#, Python, or another modern programming language.
  • Basic understanding of digital electronics, microcontrollers, or computer architecture.
  • Basic exposure in Embedded C Programming.
  • Interested in hands-on hardware/software development
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned tasks
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience or coursework in any of the following areas is helpful but not required:
  • ST or Texas Instruments Microcontrollers
  • Debuggers, JTAG and usage of Embedded IDE's
  • Processor peripherals of GPIO, UART, SPI, ADC, DAC, and PWM,
  • State machines, Interrupts, and RTOS.
  • Laboratory equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
  • Git, Bitbucket, or other version control tools.
  • SQL queries and basic database architecture.
  • Feedback control systems or signal processing.
  • Three-phase power systems or power electronics.
  • Attempted to build a custom PCB board with an MCU.
  • Knowledge of PLC and HMI Programming
  • Knowledge of Software ticking system - JIRA

Previous experience with these technologies is not expected. The intern will have opportunities to learn many of them while working with the engineering team.

Job Responsibilities
Typical Job Responsivities will vary based on projects assigned but could include the following:
  • C code development for 32-bit Digital Signal Processors (DSPs)
  • C# desktop application development.
  • Development of automation scripts for Bench Testing
  • Development of C unit-testing code
  • Validation testing of software changes
  • Implementing new software features
  • Enhancing existing software features
  • Tracking and documenting customer or internally reported issues in an issue tracker system.
  • Support of production for live debugging testing
  • Learn how to safely operate power lab equipment, including motor drives to test software and hardware changes.
  • Construction of prototype circuits and test fixtures as needed by the engineering team
  • Maintenance of hardware/software test fixtures.
Students will be exposed to all or some of the following tools and technologies: Embedded Integrated Development Environments such as TI Code Composer Studio and Atmel Studio, Visual Studio application development, SQLite databases, embedded communication stack and file system libraries, Git Version Control, Atlassian JIRA issue tracking, project documentation WIKIs, PSIM circuit simulation, Digital Signal Processors, Microcontrollers, analog circuits, power converter hardware, and industrial induction motor drives.

The job will require the ability to work safely in a high voltage power lab under the guidance of qualified lab personnel.
