The Role
The Layer 1 Data Center Technician at Presidio is responsible for the installation, maintenance, documentation, and troubleshooting of physical network and infrastructure components within the data center environment. This role focuses on the physical layer (OSI Layer 1), including structured cabling, rack and stack activities, hardware installations, asset management, and supporting operational excellence in a mission-critical facility.

Travel Requirements:

This role will be located onsite in the Pheonix, AZ Metro area. The successful candidate selected for this role must reside within 30 minutes of this location.

Responsibilities Include:

Physical Infrastructure Support

• Install, label, test, and maintain copper and fiber optic cabling.
• Perform rack and stack activities for servers, network devices, storage systems, and other IT equipment.
• Install cable management systems and ensure adherence to data center standards.
• Conduct cable tracing, certification, and remediation activities.

Hardware Deployment & Maintenance

• Perform hardware installations, moves, adds, and changes (MAC activities).
• Replace failed components such as power supplies, drives, fans, and transceivers according to documented procedures.
• Support equipment decommissioning and disposal processes.
• Maintain accurate inventory and asset tracking records.

Operational Support

• Respond to data center service requests and incidents within established SLAs.
• Perform routine inspections of racks, cages, cabinets, and cabling systems.
• Support site audits and compliance requirements.

Required Skills and Professional Experience:

• Bachelor's degree or the equivalent work experience and/or military experience
• 1-3 years of experience in a data center, telecommunications, or infrastructure environment.
• Knowledge of structured cabling systems, including copper and fiber optics.
• Familiarity with data center operations and physical infrastructure.
• Basic understanding of networking concepts and the OSI model.

Additional Preferred Skills and Professional Experience:

• CompTIA A+, Network+, or similar certifications.
• Experience working in enterprise, colocation, cloud, or hyperscale data centers.

Physical Requirements:

• Must live within 30 minutes of Phoenix Metro area.
• Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces as needed.
• Comfortable working in hot/cold aisle environments.
• Ability to work after-hours, weekends, or on-call shifts.
