DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 800 professional staff and 2100 student staff spanning five major units. Deeply devoted to offering students a transformational educational experience, our division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership of student success programs, activities, and initiatives.

Colleges, Housing, and Educational Services (CHES) is a multifaceted organization within the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). CHES provides leadership in student life, residential services, housing, dining, facilities, capital planning, conference services, early education services, and business and financial analysis. These units deliver educational and developmental programs that enhance the campus experience for students, faculty, staff, children, and external constituents.

CHES oversees on-campus housing and dining for approximately 9,500 undergraduate and graduate students across ten residential colleges and six multi-college residential communities, supporting both single students and students with families.

JOB SUMMARY

The Coordinator for Student Staff Training and Development works within College Student Life (CSL) reports to the Associate Director for Academic and Co-Curricular Partnerships and plays a crucial role in supporting the ongoing training and development efforts for all student staff across residential communities.

This position is responsible for coordinating and facilitating holistic, community-centered, and developmental training experiences throughout the year for residential and college student life staff. The role is focused on fostering collaboration, ensuring that training programs align with student development theories and residential community goals, and providing continuous support for student staff in their roles. The Coordinator works closely with CSL/ARCH staff and the Associate Director for Academic and Co-Curricular Partnerships to implement training initiatives that support student staff in creating inclusive, supportive, and engaging living environments for residents.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $65,000/annually.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Student Staff Training and Development

  • Coordinate and facilitate ongoing training programs for CSL/ARCH student staff, focusing on personal development, community engagement, crisis response, and conflict resolution.
  • Develop and implement training modules that address key competencies such as communication, leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and mental health awareness.
  • Foster a student-centered training model that emphasizes the holistic development of student staff members.
  • Collaborate with CSL staff to assess the training needs of student staff and design training content and delivery strategies accordingly.
  • Ensure training content is continuously updated to reflect current best practices, institutional priorities, and emerging student needs.
  • Coordinate training programs, with a focus on community-building, emergency response preparedness, and crisis management.
  • Create and maintain training materials, resources, and documentation to support student staff development and training.

30% - Collaboration and Coordination

  • Work closely with residential and college student life to assess ongoing student staff training needs and collaborate on implementation strategies.
  • Build strong relationships with other departments, such as Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Campus Safety, and other Division of Student Affairs and Success departments, to ensure comprehensive and well-rounded training opportunities for student staff.
  • Facilitate collaboration with faculty, college programs, and academic units to integrate academic content and co-curricular opportunities into student staff training.
  • Act as a resource for student staff in addressing student concerns, providing guidance and support as they navigate their roles.
  • Ensure that training programs align with the college community's goals and the overall mission of College Student Life (CSL).
  • Serve as a point of contact for student staff, offering guidance on professional development opportunities and helping students grow in their roles.

15% - Community Building and Support

  • Support student staff in building a positive, inclusive, and academically supportive living environment within CSL/ARCH communities.
  • Assist in the creation of programs and initiatives that foster a strong sense of belonging and student engagement among college affiliates.
  • Provide guidance on community development strategies that help student staff facilitate meaningful connections among residents.
  • Develop ongoing support structures for student staff that focus on peer mentoring, wellness, and community-building.

10% - Administrative and Organizational Support

  • Maintain accurate records of student staff training participation, and progress.
  • Prepare and submit regular reports to the Associate Director for Academic and Co-Curricular Partnerships on training outcomes, assessments, and areas of improvement.
  • Assist in the coordination and organization of key student events, such as training sessions, community engagement initiatives, and educational programs for residential students.
  • Support the overall effectiveness of the student staff training program by continuously evaluating and improving training practices.

5% - Budget Management and Fiscal Responsibility

  • Assist in managing the budget for student staff training and development programs, ensuring all expenditures align with departmental priorities and institutional policies.
  • Serve as a good fiduciary steward of departmental resources by identifying cost-effective strategies for training delivery while maintaining high-quality, impactful programs.
  • Monitor spending throughout the year, providing timely updates on budget status and working collaboratively with leadership to adjust plans as necessary.
  • Ensure that resources are allocated efficiently and responsibly, with a focus on maximizing impact and maintaining financial transparency.
  • Review and assess external vendor contracts and costs associated with training programs, ensuring they align with budgetary constraints and department goals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Experience in student affairs, residential life, or training and development within a higher education setting.
  • Experience in facilitating training programs for students, particularly in the areas of leadership, community development, and crisis response.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of campus partners, including student affairs staff, faculty, and administrative units.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate and manage multiple training events and initiatives.
  • Familiarity with student development theories and best practices in residential education.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for diverse student populations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Experience in working with student staff training programs in a large, complex residential life environment.
  • Knowledge of current trends and issues in student affairs, residential life, and student development.
  • Experience with program assessment and evaluation to measure the effectiveness of student staff training programs.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • This position requires flexibility in scheduling, including evening and weekend hours, especially during key training periods. Some travel may be required for training-related activities and events.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
