Learn more about the benefits of working at UC Brief Summary of Job Duties: Under the general direction of the Director, the Assistant Director oversees the community advocacy, outreach, education and student life efforts of the department. Oversees department in the absence of the Director. Supervises 3 FTE. Serves as back up supervisor to other FTE staff (3) and student staff interns (8) as needed. Oversee their efforts to provide complex campus education and awareness training, community outreach, student life support, and programming to the Black community. Assists director in the development of strategic planning to include department program design, short- and long-range goals. Works to integrate research, Best Practice, and assessment findings into department practice and training. Utilizes advanced knowledge of Black student development, critical race theory, implicit bias, multicultural identity, intersectionality and student life, and skills in supervision, communication, and political acumen to develop programs, and outreach services. Serves on university-wide student service committees relevant to advocacy, campus climate, incident response and ally and awareness trainings. Required Qualifications:

Gathers input about the OBSD's program model from students to include Black Student Union and any related student advisory board. Establishes collaborative relationships with existing efforts focusing on the Black community, such as the African diasporic Cultural Resource Center (AdCRC) and Academic Initiatives' Black Student Engagement Program. Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders, on and off campus, critical to the OBSD and students' success. Aligns program design to the division and campus mission and ensures integration with campus efforts that support other marginalized groups. Oversees department and staff in Director's absence. Assists with operations and participates in campus campaigns and efforts to secure external funding, as needed. Oversees department staff responsible for communications to a wide range of campus stakeholders, including Black students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Supports Student Life efforts and collaboration with student organizations and National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations. Assists with outreach, community building, access-related programs, and campus-wide diversity education, advocacy, and awareness training efforts. 15% Assessment: In collaboration with the Director, works on the assessment and evaluation of departmental and respective functional-area learning, operational, and program efforts. Collaborates on department and division reports. Assists with departmental IT software programs to maintain student and community contacts and communications. Identifies assessment methods, embeds assessment into program models, evaluates impact, and shares findings with relevant parties. In collaboration with the Director and academic achievement counselors, works on the development of a Black student survey instrument, obtains human subjects approval, and conducts data analysis. Makes recommendations on how the department and division can act on findings. Works with the department team and key stakeholders to identify barriers and motivators related to the curricular and co-curricular success of African American/Black students at UCSB. Ensures a strengths-based approach to assessing student academic success and alignment with campus priorities. 15% Advocacy, Outreach and Education: Promotes and advocates for the special needs and experiences of Black students, including the impacts of gender, family, socioeconomics, etc. Works with campus efforts supporting other underserved communities, such as low-income and first-generation students, and provides awareness training on cross-cultural and intersectional issues. Consults on campus services, processes, policies, and practices and makes recommendations to Student Affairs and the campus regarding their impact on marginalized communities. Consults with departments, partners, and faculty at large regarding student campus climate concerns. Shares information, resources, and reporting options and offers support, as appropriate. Serves as a primary responder and trainer for campus hate incidents and assists the campus during emergencies, as needed. Establishes relationships with campus and community units, agencies, and professional organizations that provide services or instruction to Black students. Works to integrate outreach efforts, programming, and services and builds collaborative relationships with key liaisons in Admissions, Outreach, other Student Affairs departments, Alumni Affairs, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion offices, Housing, Dining & Auxiliary Enterprises, MCC, EOP, Student Life, the Department of Black Studies, the Center for Black Studies Research, etc. Conducts presentations and training sessions and participates in ongoing training with campus units and higher education organizations on current issues, theories, ethics, and outreach strategies relevant to the Black student community and other underserved populations. Stays abreast of research and best practices in higher education and student affairs related to working with the Black community. Maintains knowledge of current issues, services, and resources. 40% Supervision: Assists the Director in supervising OBSD staff, including running staff meetings and supporting the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of new staff and professional development and in-service training, as needed. Provides direct supervision to staff and oversees their program design, implementation, and evaluation in the functional areas of community advocacy, outreach, campus education and awareness efforts, and programming. Supervises, appraises, and evaluates staff performance in accordance with goals and objectives; sets goals; monitors progress and productivity; interprets and enforces policy; and determines disciplinary processes in consultation with the Director and Employee and Labor Relations. Handles complaint and grievance resolution, workload distribution, and employee relations. Identifies areas for professional and personal development and provides training opportunities to meet staff members' professional development goals and objectives. Is responsible for effectively communicating with staff about campus resources, training, policy updates, the strategic plan, and emerging student and campus community issues. Ensures staff compliance with campus and UC policies and required training. 15% Student Services: Uses advanced knowledge of retention, academic achievement, and multicultural research to create an infrastructure of services that holistically supports Black students at UCSB. Creates program designs inclusive of strengths-based models, cultural wealth, and an understanding of academic and personal barriers. Assesses distressed students and identifies risk and intervention needs. Interacts with appropriate campus or community agencies to receive and refer students. Provides support throughout the intervention process. Is available for crisis response, crisis management, intervention, and consultation, as needed. Makes referrals to CAPS, Student Health, Social Work, colleges, SMHCS, AS Legal Services, etc. Collaborates with Admissions and EAOP staff, affiliated student organizations, such as BSU, and departments on outreach efforts to prospective Black students. Participates in campus outreach efforts on and off campus. Participates in the campus response to students during hate-related incidents or emergencies. Participates in town halls and community meetings. Participates in relevant campus climate, community-building, and outreach task forces, committees, and initiatives, as assigned. Mediates conflicts among students, student organizations, cultural groups, etc. Works with campus partners offering restorative justice services. Ensures a communication mechanism is in place to inform UCSB students, alumni, and colleagues about programming, services, resources, best practices, and mentorship or engagement opportunities. Designs, implements, and administers outreach events and programs to promote awareness of the critical needs of Black students.
