The Welder 2 Technician independently performs moderately complex welding, fitting, fabrication, repair, and finishing work. Plans work from detailed drawings, resolves routine and some nonroutine fit-up and weld issues, and supports less-experienced welders while maintaining safety, quality, and production flow.


Responsibilities

* Interpret detailed drawings, weld symbols, tolerances, work packages, material requirements, and inspection points; plan a practical work sequence.
* Prepare, fit, and tack moderately complex assemblies; control gap, alignment, squareness, orientation, access, and distortion risk before welding.
* Set up and adjust approved welding processes for position, material thickness, joint condition, access, and heat control; perform multi-position or repair work as qualified.
* Diagnose and correct common issues involving fit-up, distortion, weld profile, equipment, consumables, sequence, or material condition; escalate code or design concerns.
* Perform visual checks, complete approved rework, and prepare weldments for inspection with accurate identification and documentation.
* Coordinate with supervisors, inspectors, engineering, material handling, and adjacent trades to resolve technical or production constraints.
* Coach Welding Helpers and Welder 1 employees on setup, fit-up, safe work, defect prevention, and efficient work sequence; recommend practical improvements.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED with 4 years of experience, or combination of equivalent experience and training.
  • Must pass the internal M.C. Dean FCAW 3G and GMAW 1G tests.
  • Additional process, position, repair, or material qualifications may be required based on assigned work.

Abilities:

  • The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and move objects weighing up to [50 pounds] on a regular basis. Candidates must demonstrate physical strength and stamina to perform various tasks, including but not limited to, loading, and unloading, operating equipment, and assisting in the transportation of various materials. Proper lifting techniques and safety protocols must be followed to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Relocates a 12 foot stepladder without assistance.
  • Works at various heights up to 60 feet and can climb and maintain balance on scaffolds, aerial lifts, catwalks and all types of ladders.
  • Walks, climbs, lifts, squats, crawls, kneels, pushes, pulls and reaches overhead on a routine and repetitive basis.
  • Possess good vision (may be corrected vision), the ability to see in color, and the ability to hear and communicate in English.
  • May use a standard ladder without exceeding the weight limit while carrying tools.
  • Tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
  • Combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (including finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
  • See details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
