System Operator Trainer

The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) applies cutting-edge technology to operating a reliable electricity system, managing competitive markets for wholesale electricity, and planning for the Empire State's energy future. The NYISO's Operations department invites applications for a full-time System Operator Trainer.

SUMMARY:

Develop, deliver and document power system operations training for NYISO operations staff and other operating entities within New York and neighboring regions.Deliver training in classroom, simulation, computer based and OJT formats.Provided instruction through one-on-one, small group and large group forums.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Participate inall phases of the Systematic Approach to Training(SAT)in support of the various System Operator Training (SOT) training programs.


  • Collaborate with the training staffs of NPCC Control Areas, theNew York Control Area (NYCA)and North AmericanTransmission Owners to deliver joint and coordinated training.


  • Conduct Job Task Analysisin conjunction with Grid Operations todeterminetheneedtoupdate Control Room Operator tasksandensure compliance with NERC Standard PER-005 requirements.


  • Document andmaintaintraining records for audit and compliance purposesin accordance withNERC and NYISO requirementsutilizingvarious compliance tools and software programs.


  • Participate in projects of varying scope and complexityin order todevelop the training needed to ensure operators have the information and skills necessary tooperatethe NYCA Transmission System.


  • ConductUser Acceptance Testing (UAT)along with Grid Operations fornew projectsutilizingthe Operator Training Simulator (OTS)tovalidateproper project behavior and expose the operators to new functionality before going live in production.


  • Contribute towards the continued improvement of training programsas a member of the NYISO Curriculum Review Committee (CRC).


  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for variousoperational and trainingtopicsin support ofNYISO committees and departments.
  • Participate in regional and national forumsrelated topower system operationsandtraining.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Power System Technology, Electrical Technology, Computer Science, Mechanical Technology or a related technical field preferred. Master's degree in Education (High School Level) or related experience in formal training and experience in instructional skills and training methods desired. Associate degree or equivalent experience with relevant certifications required.

EXPERIENCE:



  • Five years of related technical or scientific/engineering training experience.


  • Demonstrated ability to deliver training to a technical trade school or junior college level.


  • Working knowledge of the use ofEnergy Managementor control systemsoftware.


  • Working knowledge of the use ofaSimulatorapplicationfor Training.
  • Documentedexperienceconductingpowersystemrelatedtraining,power systemoperationorinstructional design experiencefortechnical topicsdesired.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

NERCReliabilityCertificationpreferred.Successful applicants willbe requiredto earn aNERCReliability Certification within six months of joining the NYISO.

Accredited trainer documentation and/or educational certification (AMA, Langevin, Navy Master Training Specialist or equivalent) preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to read, analyze and interpretengineeringdrawings, technical manuals,operational criteria documents, businesscorrespondenceand procedure manuals.Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff and external industry partners.


  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area,circumferenceand volume.Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.


  • Ability to solve practicaland complexproblems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.Ability to interpret a variety of instructionsfurnishedin written oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Intermediate competency in Windows operating environment using MS Office applications including PowerPoint,e-mailandbrowserprograms.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.Contact with staff and public will occur.Travel may be required to attend and/or conduct meetings, conferences and training. This position may require work on nights, weekends or holidays.
