Position Summary

The University of New Mexico's Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) is looking for a motivated, detailed-oriented, self-starter to join our team of professionals as a Senior Sponsored Projects Officer.

OSP is a core office the provides administrative, management and oversight of the world class extramural sponsored research programs being conducted at our R1 Carnegie-designated University. We provide an exciting, multifaceted and fast-paced work environment that emphasizes customer service, professionalism and growth. This is an expert/advanced-level position in our sponsored research office, with supervisory oversight of day-to-day technical, administrative and operational aspects in the sponsored project life cycle.

This position serves the University research community and will have a workload that provides direct support of externally funded projects through comprehensive proposal review and submission, award and modification review and negotiations and issuance of outgoing subaward agreements. This role places utmost emphasis on compliance, adhering to applicable federal, state and local guidelines and regulations. The Senior Sponsored Projects Officer is a liaison between the University and various governmental and non-governmental agencies who sponsor projects and therefore must have a deep level of competency in strategic and effective communication.

As a core office of the University, OSP works in a fast-paced environment. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who has a proven record of leading multiple projects to the finish line while maintaining staff engagement, providing staff development, ensuring quality output and motivating others on day-to-day operations, while still promoting work/life balance. The selected candidate must possess broad research administration knowledge of sponsored projects; solid computer and technical skills, including experience working in electronic Research Administration (eRA) systems such as Cayuse, Streamlyne and Huron; and experience with various federal compliance polices, especially those within the Office of Management & Budget (OMB), Uniform Guidance (UG) and Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Research Administration knowledge gained through work in core office and/or department support
  • Familiarity working in systems such as: Stremlyne, Huron/Click, Banner, MyReports
  • Supervisory Experience

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Extensive Experience in Research Administration, particularly with a deep understanding of the sponsored research lifecycle
  • Experience working with a variety of sponsors: federal, industry, non/for-profit, foreign, other universities.
  • Ability to train and explain complex topics
  • Strong communication skills
  • Solid analytical skills
  • Excellent customer service and strong sense of professionalism
  • Ability to mentor and be mentored in a close, collaborative department


Additional Requirements
Flexible work options. Requires on-site during initial training with opportunity for hybrid and local remote options.
