The University of Arizona's Libraries invites you to apply for the role of Materials Handler I. In this role, you will perform specialized shipping and facilities activities that require sound professional judgment, strong analytical skills, and professional application of shipping practices. You will collaborate with departments across the University of Arizona Libraries, particularly the AIS/Resource Sharing Department, to support ongoing interlibrary loan (ILL) shipments and ensure resources are available for these processes. You will also partner closely with the General Maintenance Mechanic and the Library Facilities Director to support facilities operations, maintain safe and organized workspaces, and contribute to the overall success of library services.

Duties & Responsibilities

Shipping and Receiving:

  • Handle and maintain the flow of materials and products at the Main
    Library dock.
  • Confirm appropriate measurements for incoming and outgoing items to compare identifying information and verify against
    bills of lading, invoices, orders, and other records.
  • Examine incoming shipments for damage or shortages and correspond with the shippers to resolve discrepancies;
    complete paperwork or forms required for documentation.
  • Analyze various shipping and receiving records to determine priorities, assignments, and
    work methods required to meet schedules, utilizing knowledge of shipping
    procedures, routes, and rates.
  • Process orders for standard stock items, such as shipping and mail
    materials.
  • Determine the appropriate method of shipment and resolve problems utilizing knowledge of shipping, receiving,
    stock, and surplus operations.
  • Responsible for keeping shipping and receiving areas clean and clear of
    any safety hazards.

Material Handling:

  • Operate motorized and non-motorized material-handling and mail-processing equipment.
  • Count, weigh, and measure incoming and outgoing items to compare identifying information and quantities against bills
    of lading, invoices, orders, and other records.
  • Using the Library Van, transport high-dollar-cost equipment, supplies,
    mail, and materials to customers; properly secure cargo and distribute weight to ensure safe transport.
  • Distribute goods to and from salvage, storage, and surplus locations.
  • Move library office furniture, materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Work closely with the Facilities Director to monitor supply levels and submit
    purchasing recommendations on a regular basis.
  • Operate and maintain material-handling equipment, including pallet jacks, hand trucks, and dollies, to move stock and reorganize storage areas.
  • Perform routine
    vehicle inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.

    jacks, and dollies.

    areas.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working
    relationships with supervisors, coworkers, customers, and vendors.
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment, one that
    values and leverages the benefits of a variety of perspectives.
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and strong
    demonstration of UA Libraries' Values.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High
    school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
Preferred Qualifications

  • One year or more of shipping and receiving experience.
  • One year or more of experience in a library environment.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of the Library of Congress call number system.
  • Experience using powered hand tools, including saws, grinders, routers, and drills.
  • Experience operating pallet jacks and other materials-handling equipment.
  • Experience performing manual and clerical duties related to shipping, receiving, inspecting, storing, issuing, and delivering a variety of materials, equipment, and supplies.
