THE POSITION

Tax Examiner 1 is trainee level work offering a great opportunity to develop skills and knowledge that support the accuracy of business tax accounts across the Commonwealth. This role with our Bureau of Registration and Taxpayer Management, Taxpayer Registration Division, Account Maintenance Section provides hands-on experience reviewing customer information, managing account updates, and assisting taxpayers and their representatives. You will build technical knowledge and learn important process that keep essential tax operations running smoothly and efficiently. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on learning how to examine business tax accounts, update customer information, and resolve processing issues to keep tax records accurate. Your work will support essential account maintenance through excellent customer service, careful attention to detail, and accurate technical and tax knowledge. As a Tax Examiner 1, you will learn and perform the following duties:

  • Customer Assistance: Answer phone, email, and other inquiries to assist taxpayers and their representatives with using online systems, completing required forms, and resolving other requests
  • Account Review: Create business tax profiles, analyze taxpayer information in multiple systems, and make updates or corrections to registration, demographics, and related information
  • System Research: Review corporate and fiscal details and verify key data, identify business structure, generate filing obligations, determine filing frequency, initiate payments and returns, and calculate penalty and interest owed
  • Data Verification: Correspond with taxpayers and their representatives to obtain or provide clarification and request documentation needed to complete work
  • Inquiry Tracking: Create, update, and resolve work items; prepare completed work and documents for imaging and scanning; and prepare daily production reports

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to three days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of general office work; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must have customer service experience.
  • You must have experience handling incoming/outgoing phone calls.
  • You must have problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • You must have professionalism and a positive attitude.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • This position will have access to Federal Tax Information (FTI) and is subject to the provisions of IRS Publication 1075 (Pub 1075) which requires you to pass an enhanced background check prior to beginning employment. Under Pub 1075, acceptance of a conditional offer of employment will require submission to and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to: a fingerprint-based federal records check; a PA State Police clearance; a check of local law enforcement agencies where you have lived, worked, and/or attended school within the last five (5) years; and a citizenship/residency verification.
