Controls Engineer, Production Control, Optimus Factory

Tesla Motors, Inc.
paid holidays, flex time, 401(k)
United States, Texas, Austin
Jul 26, 2026
What to Expect

Tesla is building the factory that will manufacture Optimus - the humanoid robot that will transform how work gets done. At Giga Texas, that future does not wait for perfect conditions. It is designed, coded, commissioned, and debugged on the production floor every day.

Join the Production Control Engineering team as a Controls Engineer supporting Optimus program work across factory automation - including automated storage and retrieval (ASRS), AMR installation and integration, conveyors, and production equipment that must run at volume with high uptime. The controls you design, commission, and improve willdeterminehow fast material moves through the plant and how reliably we scale Optimus manufacturing at Giga Texas.

This is not a maintenance-only role. You will design, program, install, commission, and continuously improve control systems for a world-class manufacturing facility at Giga Austin - under the same demand for speed, quality, and ownership that defines every Tesla product.

What You'll Do
  • Develop end-to-end PLC programs to Tesla standards (Structured Text, Ladder Logic, Graph)
  • Design clear, diagnostic-focused HMI screens for complex machinery
  • Create, review, and approve electrical schematics and keep related documentation current
  • Lead equipment design reviews and act as technical liaison with Production, Maintenance, and IT
  • Support installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of control systems on production equipment
  • Drive continuous process optimization to improve cycle time and uptime
  • Establish and execute test plans, risk assessments, and control-system validation
  • Maintain backups, version control, and continuous improvement of PLC and Ignition SCADA standards
  • Develop and deliver training and maintenance documentation for end users and support staff
  • Own supplier/equipment buy-offs, robot programming/troubleshooting, and occasional on-call or weekend support

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechatronics, Control Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years as an Automation & Controls or Robotics Engineer on electromechanical systems in a manufacturing environment
  • 3+ years programming and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix/CompactLogix) and Siemens (TIA Portal); Siemens TIA Portal proficiency required
  • 2+ years strong HMI/SCADA development; Ignition SCADA and SIMATIC HMI preferred
  • 2+ years hands-on robotics experience (Fanuc preferred)
  • Familiarity with ASRS, AGVs/AMRs, conveyors, and material-flow systems; install/commission experience with AMR/AGV and automated storage is a strong plus
  • Experience with vision systems (Keyence, SICK, Cognex) and SQL/scripting for production reporting
  • Competence creating electrical schematics; EPLAN preferred
  • Knowledge of production quality metrics, LEAN methods, and high-volume manufacturing deployment, with excellent written and verbal communication across operators, engineers, and leadership
  • Nice to have: Python/SQL/Linux/Docker or embedded controls; high-mix or high-rate assembly, ASRS, or AMR fleet work; plant-wide controls standards; OT/IT collaboration (networks, SCADA, data)
