The Interpreting Captioning Unit (ICU) and Media Captioning Coordinator is responsible for a variety of technical and administrative duties in support of accommodation and accessibility services. They work closely with the Disability Resource Center in providing media captioning, sign language interpreting, oral interpreting services, and real-time captioning accommodations.

This position will have a primary focus in locating or creating captioned and audio described materials, as well as processing daily requests for sign language, oral interpreting services, and real-time captioning services for students, faculty, staff and visitors of the University of Minnesota. This position may serve on one or more cross-functional teams. In addition, this position will support accessibility on campus and train constituents to create captions and transcripts using accessibility best practices for content offered through web, mobile applications, or social media.

Successful candidates will possess an ability to interact with instructors of various knowledge and comfort levels, and demonstrate ambition for continuous improvement and high performance standards. The Media Captioning and ICU Coordinator is employed by the Disability Resource Center and reports to the Associate Director of Media Accessibility.

Location and Work environment: Hybrid, with opportunity to work on campus but setting is mostly remote.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.

Primary Responsibilities:
85% - Coordination

  • Receive and process daily media captioning and audio description requests.
  • Organize, process and schedule media projects to be captioned or described by an appropriate vendor.
  • Research/locate captioned versions, when applicable.
  • Maintain and update media captioning request queue on a regular basis.
  • Review materials to ensure accessibility before delivery.
  • Follow media captioning request processes.
  • Schedule full-time and hourly sign language service providers for classroom and non-classroom situations; utilize external interpreter referral agencies, CART, media captioning, and audio description agencies. This includes coordination of sub work, one-time requests, ongoing requests and requests for conferences/special events at the U.
  • Support semester interpreting/CART scheduling, including soliciting consumer schedules, creating master hours grids, etc.
  • Reconcile vendor invoices for interpreting, CART and media captioning in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a liaison between the student and instructor regarding accommodations and/or accessibility.
  • Provide consultation regarding disability-related accommodations when needed.

10% - DRC Support

  • Partner with departments, faculty, and staff to create, design, assist, or consult in the development of compliant and inclusive digital materials.
  • Assist in the everyday operations, special projects and time-sensitive duties of the DRC.
  • Work actively to create a positive and productive work environment
  • Is an effective spokesperson for the unit with others both inside and outside their unit.
  • Support workshop development on accessibility guidelines, provide training to the campus community.
  • Follow established processes and procedures of the DRC and the University.
  • Perform a variety of support duties which require a range of skills and knowledge of local, state, federal and organizational policies and procedures within a confidential environment.
  • Provide task direction, instruction, and training to student employees working in media accessibility/ICU when needed.
  • Maintain the DRC's electronic archival system.
  • Manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Support with coordinating other projects as needed.

5% - DRC and University Collaboration

  • Participate in unit/departmental meetings as requested
  • Provide backup admin support to other DRC units as needed
  • Participate in professional development around learning new software and technology
  • Accommodate and provide flexibility in work schedules, including evenings and some weekends, and overtime when necessary
  • Consult with colleagues across the university, system campuses, and greater disability services field via local or national professional organizations.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED and four years of related general office experience. Training/education may be substituted for some of the years of experience.
  • Two years of experience in a customer service setting, interacting with a wide variety of consumers
  • Computer experience required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intersection of disability with other identities such as but not limited to racial, ethnic, gender, and spiritual/religious identities. Demonstrated capacity to use this understanding in communication and problem-solving with students and other University stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Conversational American Sign Language (ASL) skills
  • Two years of experience providing interpreter scheduling and referral services
  • Experience providing disability-related accommodations.
  • Working knowledge of media captioning processes, including applications and software.
  • Experience providing direct service to people with disabilities in a postsecondary education setting.
  • Experience providing training, creating and updating training materials.
  • Experience with coordinating, creating, and reviewing media/video captioning and/or audio described materials.
  • Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to adapt to changing work priorities
  • Strong skills with captioning editing tools, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace/GSuite tools (especially Google Drive, Docs and Sheets).
  • Understanding of media captioning best practices.
  • Ability to manage critical deadlines and prioritize multiple tasks/details in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of people in occasionally stressful circumstances.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to proactively problem solve and engage in collaboration
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement
