About the Job

General Summary of Position
The Assistant Director directs and manages the daily operations of the Public Safety department. In the absence of the Director handles the Director's duties accordingly. Assists the Director in conducting internal MWHC investigations. Represents the MWHC Public Safety Department and coordinates activities as appropriate with external agencies regulators other MedStar hospitals and MedStar Health corporate representatives and DC Hospital Association members. Directly oversees compliance with budget expectations involving all operational aspects. Directly supervises the Shift Supervisors responsible for the daily implementation of all operations of the Public Safety Department at MWHC and at the Physicians Office Building Cancer Institute and Trinity. Initiates policy changes where needed. Develops strategies to most effectively and efficiently utilize and deploy the Public Safety resources. Has dotted line supervisory input for the Department Manager of Public Safety Emergency Response Policy & Training and for the Department Manager of Public Safety Support Services & Special Projects.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities


  • Acts as the Director's representative in promoting the hospital's mission Patient First emphasis budgetary priorities and departmental goals.
  • Recommends and implements department policies procedures and programs. Ensures that operations are conducted in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and department priorities. Develops resource deployment strategies in coordination with Department Managers and consistent with trend analysis of data relative to requests for assistance in the hospital high risk security areas and other issues that require attention.
  • Manages the uniformed staff on all shifts. Directly supervises the Shift Supervisors and ensures implementation of department policies training and resource deployment strategies.
  • Develops and maintains a current Standard Operating Procedures Manual in collaboration with Department Managers and the Director and reviewed by Legal Counsel and/or Risk Management for MWHC where appropriate and approved by Quality and Safety Committee where needed.
  • Maintains timely communication with the Director and other hospital leadership to ensure awareness of Public Safety key incidents issues and recommended resolutions.
  • Reviews reports data dispatch logs and other pertinent hospital documents to assess trends and redirect resources where needed.
  • Participates in the interview and selection process for new hires to the Department.
  • Develops and maintains liaison with external agencies and ensures the appropriate coordination with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in matters of mutual responsibilities. Ensures compliance with Security Officers Management Bureau (SOMB) requirements specific to the training and oversight of Special Police Officers Commissions at MWHC.
  • Recommends and implements programs to ensure high customer service is provided by the Department members to the patients MWHC associates clinicians physicians visitors and vendors. Recommends corrective actions when needed.
  • Participates in the selection and development of the Shift Supervisors to include mentoring supervisory training and ensuring competencies in all aspects of the supervisors' duties. Determines gaps in performance of shift supervisors and coaches as needed to develop competencies. Takes corrective or personnel actions where needed in coordination and collaboration with HR.
  • Participates in budget development and oversees compliance with budgetary limitations for all operational matters within the department.
  • Oversees that Supervisors ensure that all routine duties are conducted that maintain the security of the hospital physical environment.
  • Ensures compliance with all Joint Commission and Department of Health requirements pertinent to Security Management.
  • Directly supports the Visitor Management program by dedicating resources where needed. Supports the hospital's and department's initiatives.
  • Participates on hospital committees and attends meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Minimal Qualifications
    Education
    • Bachelor's degree including graduation from an accredited police academy. required
    Experience
    • 5-7 years a sworn law enforcement officer in a position of management/supervision of law enforcement personnel required
    • Experience in management of police uniformed patrol operations plus investigations required
    • Management experience in a hospital of college campus setting preferred
    Licenses and Certifications
    • DL NUMBER - Driver License Valid and in State (DRLIC) required
